Critics Consensus

House is a gleefully demented collage of grand guginol guffaws and bizarre sequences.

Scott Tobias AV Club House seems born out of restlessness and contempt for the status quo; it’s one of those movies that doubles as a piece of film criticism, intent on exposing and exploding all the tiresome clichés that commercial cinema constantly recycles. Sep 27, 2022 Full Review Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, "House" seems like it was beamed to Earth from another planet. Rated: 3/4 Sep 27, 2022 Full Review John Monaghan Detroit Free Press A silly, surreal cross of Japanese horror, anime and just plain weirdness, this 1977 fever dream of styles makes you wonder: How did this ever get made? Rated: 3/4 Sep 27, 2022 Full Review Brian Bisesi Horror Movie Club Podcast House's biggest strength and weakness is that it is utterly disorienting which can be very engaging for the viewer but can also keep you from being grounded in the film. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 22, 2025 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy A gonzo horror flick that surely must have influenced Sam Raimi as he prepped The Evil Dead. Rated: 3/4 Oct 20, 2024 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com Visually and viscerally stunning from start to finish, “House” is much more than a mere masterpiece. mark s This is simply the worst non-American made movie ever made. Usually, that would get me excited, as I gleefully seek out awful film. Problem is, it's not 'so bad it's good' awful. It's just awful on all levels. It's as though some stoned 12 year old boys thought they'd have a laugh and patch together a bunch of garbage spliced from random crap they found on the internet. Worse. They play the same cloying song over and over and over again throughout the entire 'film'. Stuck in my head forever! Simply bad in a bad way. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/25 Full Review Brian S A kaleidoscopic fever dream collage of pop-art chaos and haunted-house absurdity. It’s disorienting, self-aware, and bursting with late-’70s energy, too psychedelically abstract to terrify yet too darkly uncanny to dismiss as mere camp. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review Erik S Too unusual to be ignored, House doesn’t even attempt to orient the viewer with a visually consistent baseline reality. Even before the film breaches the supernatural, the images are intermittently conveyed rendered using painted backgrounds, slow motion and pixel animation just ‘cause. Love it or hate it, at least watch it to talk about it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/15/25 Full Review Tim L. Just absolutely bonkers! Jaw dropped for most of the movie, cracking up as well, but like….what did I watch? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Jace T This movie was absolutely bonkers. It was absolutely captivating, and completely unsettling. I can't say I really enjoyed the movie, as I was somewhat confused and lost throughout the runtime, but I just couldn't look away. The editing on display here was strange and eerie. The music, especially the repeating piano tunes are menacing and upbeat. The movie is oddly sexual, and the visuals are mostly beautiful. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review Lau S Great Japanese movie! I little bit outdated, but I liked it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
