In the wake of a violent protest against the Vietnam War, New Yorker Eric Mills (Graham Beckel) travels to Pennsylvania Amish country to inform Eli (Pat Hingle) and Anna Witmer (Geraldine Page), a Mennonite couple, of the tragic death of their son -- Eric's best friend, Jim (Steve Weaver). Upon arriving, Eric faces the judging eyes of the Witmers and the community-at-large. But as Eric struggles for acceptance, he finds himself curiously drawn to the romantic simplicity of Amish life.
