Alejandro Turdó Hoy Sale Cine Hemisphere shows tons of potential from director Christopher Maes. Its minimal approach -both budgetary and thematically- manages to put together an enigmatic space Thriller that moves one revelation at a time. Pat H Hemisphere is rocking some big ambitions: setting up a coherent and involving sci-fi environment with clearly limited resources. The cgi visuals are a bit of a mixed bag (working much better on distant shots than close-ups) but the practical cinematography is much more consistent, creating a claustrophobic and engaging atmosphere with effective sound design (which wears its influences proudly on its sleeve) and a lovely sense of building pressure. There are welcome moments of humour (the selection of the AI voice made me chuckle) and the central performance from Paige Rion is appealingly understated. For most of the running time this is a two-hander between Rion and Julie Kashmanian's mysterious Phoebe, and the drip feed of information rewards careful viewing as the narrative picture gradually comes into focus. If you're in the mood for a character-driven slow-burn sci-fi, this is one worth settling in for. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Kolo P I heard a lot about this indie sci-fi film which was made based on experiences from the pandemic. This is however an indie sci-fi film and not Interstellar, Passengers or Alien so it shouldn't be compared to $100M budgets. The overall story and plot is pretty solid and keeps the attention well. Sure you can see that some of the set dressing and props are homemade but that adds to the cult nature of a film like this. Remember the old 1950s Star Trek or Doctor Who episodes with wobbly sets?! It would have been nice to have the space station set dressing a bit higher quality but this is an indie film made in a basement and it works regardless and goes to show that films can be made simply. With only 2 principal actors, it's pretty hard to capture attention and tension for 90 minutes but it does have the feel of a stage play at times (a good thing) so we have to focus on the interaction between the two leads who work well together. This film demonstrates what can be achieved on a micro budget and without a ton of money for CGI and complex set, the filmmakers has to fall back on a good character plot (what films used to be about!). I foresee that this film will one day become a cult classic in the low budget indie sci-fi genre. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review T S Very Good Indie Sci-Fi. Kept my interest thru out which I can't say for many films. Liked the cast and surprises. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Chris P A forensics expert is dispatched to an abandoned mining space station to investigate its crew members' disappearance. But upon discovering a lone survivor, she learn that the marauders responsible for the violent events on board may be returning to the ship. An impressive debut from writer/director Chris Maes, Hemispere is mostly carried by the two central charismatic performances of Paige Rion and Julie Kasmanian. The CGI pulls way above its weight, and the film's indie budget constraints are cleverly worked around, with a story is strong enough to make for an engaging sci-fi thriller. Well worth checking out. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review James C Hemisphere sucked me in with it's great poster art and kept me there with my fascination of what indie producer/directors like Chris Maes can do on a shoestring budget. Hemisphere is a interesting change of pace compared to the massive budget sci-fi blockbuster we are all used to, Star Wars, Alien, Star Trek and the list goes on. Hemisphere focuses on our two main characters and the situation they are in. No world ending stakes, or superpowers that make them invisible, which I LOVE! Now it's not all sunshine and roses, it is obvious that because of their budget there were constraints when it came to set design, wardrobe and VFX. But that didn't stop them from trying to make the biggest budget thing they could do! From exteriors of space ships, to crawling along the exterior of a space station, practical effects of dead bodies, this film gave it everything they had. As long as you don't go into this film expecting a big budget sci-fi, like Alien, I think you will be pleasently surprised with the fun story Hemisphere has to tell! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Sydney F While I can appreciate the fact they them completed a film, that is about where it ends for me. The VFX were marginal at best, cinematography was amateurish, the acting was hit or miss, I think if the writing was stronger that would have helped the talent. But one of the biggest issues was how rough the set design was. It was very obviously filmed in someone's house or apartment. The set was built of gaffer tape and cardboard. I will say the story was the best part of the film. While the twist ending was a bit confusing I can appreciate they tried to give us something fun and unexpected! 2.5 stars for just finishing a film, as I know that is a challenge in and of itself.
