Renata Adler New York Times Clive Donner, in short, who directs, directs quite beautifully from one point of view. Not the viewpoint of spoken language certainly, or of narrative. But from a pictorial point of view, of what a new fantasy of mod love and courtship might look like. Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Directed by Clive Donner (The Caretaker (1963) and What's New Pussycat? (1965), and written by Hunter Davies, adapted from his own 1965 novel, this was marketed at the time as an English take on The Graduate (1967), but Davies original text was inspired by The Catcher in the Rye. But, it is a funny and swinging look at what youth was like back in the 1960's. In the newtown of Stevenage, sixth former Jamie McGregor (Barry Evans) is looking to lose his virginity, but he's had no luck with woman, and his best friend Spike (Christopher Timothy) seems to have more luck. But, Jamie is determined to get a woman, and he tries his chances with 4 ladies. Linda (Adrienne Posta), who he's known since school, Caroline Beauchamp (Angela Scoular), whose parents (Denholm Elliot and Maxine Audley) are a pair of old swingers, the frigid Paula (Sheila White) and the friendly, free-spirited Mary Gloucester (Judy Geeson), but Jamie still can't find the right moment to finally seduce the girls. It's a good timepiece of the time, and the cast is a who's who of British film and TV of the 1960's/70's and 80's, and it has a swinging sixties soundtrack by The Spenser Davis Group and Traffic, (the former had a cameo in the film), plus the melancholy concrete setting of Stevenage adds to the nostalgic mood of the film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Attempts to show the trials of a middle class young man in the swinging 60's as he tries to find love or lust. Now it is very dated and the dream sequences are almost embarrassing. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Stevenage a home of free love and orgies. A lot of Dr in the House people in it too. Enjoyable romp.. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Chris Timothy and Diane Keen together for the first time! Good fun. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Based on Hunter Davies novel this outdated film is about a young man trying to lose his virginity. the storyline isn't too bad but Barry Evans (mind your language) continuing narrative is tiresome. Filmed on location in Stevenage -not a plus! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Fairly innocuous for a sex comedy, and although the conclusion wasn't anything especially original it did make me realize that I'd grown more attached to the characters than I expected. Probably more interesting as kind of a time capsule now, especially the soundtrack. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
