Dennis Harvey Variety Beyond capturing some impressive musicianship (notably from innovative drummer Brian Blade), this deliberately low-grade presentation is a chore to watch, unalleviated by solarized-color bits and gratuitous dance interludes. Sep 21, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member As a producer, Daniel Lanois is known for working with such artists as: The Neville Brothers, Peter Gabriel, U2, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson (to name a few) which in turn has earned Grammy's for all involved. Many are unaware that he is a musician first and foremost with a handful of excellent albums that showcase some of the same atmospheric music he has become known for. This film was released with to coincide with his last album release of the same title, as a behind-the-scenes look at Lanois' approach to music, what music means to him as well as who he works with and why. It's great to hear his music and see him man a control panel like it is an instrument in and of itself. It's also cool to hear him talk qith Brian Eno, about working with Dylan, U2 and how he found his drummer in New Orleans but the bit with Billy Bob Thornton (Lanois did the sdtk for "Sling Blade") was just kinda silly. That was Thornton's fault though. Lanois was is such an interesting person that I was hoping the film would cover more about him. Where he lives, how he writes and how long it takes him to work on an album or even to hear others talk about him a little more. There is some of all that but not nearly enough unfortunately. The film would have benefited from a different directional approach too, at times it felt too experimental and distracting, especially with some chick unnecessarily dancing around in next to nothing. Still, there hasn't been a film about this Canadian icon for some reason and it was great to see the artist himself take the project to task. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Peronsally, I consider Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Rick Rubin, and Nigel Goodrich as the most important music producers of the past 20 years. I was already interested in Lanois' solo work prior to this, now I'm hooked. What he does with a steel guitar is beautiful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Simply awesome. One of the best music docus I have ever seen. The music is ethereal. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Possibly the greatest music film I've ever seen. Even those not familiar with Lanois's work should go on this journey of sight and sound. You'll learn a lot about music and life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
