Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com A stellar find for fans of grindhouse or Eurosleaze (although it's quite better than either of those two definitions usually promise), Hitch Hike is an intriguing entry into Campanile's extensive filmography. Audience Member This is a brutal story of a couple traveling across an arid region, the american southwest. They pick up a hitchhiker and off we go in a story of sun baked noir. This is not a pretty picture at all. The only decent person is the wife played by Corinne Cléry. She gets raped a occasionally in this and is the sort of woman that responds to rape part way in and then really enjoys it. Which is to say, a movie character from a backward period of humanity.. So that is a problem but she is a decent young woman in comparison to her rapist hubby. He seems to be willing to form a pact with the psycho-killer played by David Hess. But he loses enthusiasm for that after watching the psycho killer rape his wife. The movie has a score by Ennio Morricone. That is nice to listen too. This movie is probably best for boys into dark stuff. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Years ago I watched a heavily edited version of this film on YouTube; I wonder if its been taken down. This is an Italian Thriller, directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile, and starring Italian actor Franco Nero (Django, Keoma, etc.), French actress Corinne Clery (The Story of Oh, Moonraker), and American actor David Hess (Last House on the Left). An boozing and bitter Italian feature writer (Nero) is on vacation in the United States with his wife, the daughter if his boss (Clery). The two bicker and fight like they are in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf but when they pick up a hitchhiker (Hess), he turns out to be a psychotic holdup man with $2 million dollars from a daring and violent robbery. The police are looking for Hess as are the partners in crime he betrayed. The unpleasant misogyny in the script (like many female characters in 1970s Italian Exploitation cinema Clery suffers overmuch) and the fact that Hess acts too much like his character Krug Stullo from Last House on the Left (poor guy was typecast for the remainder of his acting career) is offset by the excellent photography, fast pace, a riveting Ennio Morricone score, and a truly nihilistic and offbeat ending that would not have happened in an American film. Locations in Italy pose as sections of Nevada and California. The details are correct down to the vehicles, police uniforms, tourist trap gas stations (Texaco), and billboards. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty great Italian exploitation movie starring original Django Franco Nero and Last House On The Left's David Hess in another fantastically psychotic role. Ennio Morricone score is awesome. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The more I see of international superstar Franco Nero, the more I like his work. A squabbling couple pick up a murderous bank robber with a gun and a suitcase full of cash. Film cautions equally against marriage and picking up hitch hikers. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member It true that David Hess pretty much just plays the same character, but nevertheless, this was quite a good movie. I liked it more than something like Last House on the Left. I really liked Franco Nero as the drunken husband. I hadn't really heard that much about this movie, not even in genre circles which surprises me. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Entertaining Italian thriller about a bickering couple who pick up a hitch hiker who of course turns out to be a psycho. It has a nice start, seeming like it's gonna be a couple having marital problems and then the crazy guy shows up. A good score from Ennio Morricone (though that hippie song that plays a lot gets annoying, I wonder if they use that song in the original Itlalian version, I watched the English dubbed) and the two leads are great. I love the way it ends, especially with the final shot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
