Hits undermines its undeniably timely message with a darkly bitter tone that makes the movie's caustic humor harder to swallow.

Chapman P I really don't get the reviews for this film. It's brilliant, very funny, and the acting is superb. Some might say that the whole thing is a set up for one joke, but even if this were true, which it isn't, it sticks the landing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/21/22 Full Review Audience Member Highly underrated. Great cast, original story. Genuinely funny. While I was watching it I was reminded of Bobcat Goldthwait's "God Bless America". However I think Hits executed a lot of the same ideas in a different and enjoyable fashion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Underrated. While criticisms about the unevenness of the story and its reliance on character behavior are justified, Hits makes a strong statement about the overabundance of celebrity in modern culture. David Cross creates a microcosm of YouTube (and other social media) culture, showing how it can turn undeserving people into overnight celebrities for nothing other than general stupidity. On top of it, he critiques the types of people who perpetuate this garbage culture by latching onto vapid egomaniacs in order to perpetuate their own ends. What's most unfortunate about Hits was that it was released two years too soon, as the idea of clueless people co-opting situations and individuals they don't fully understand in order to facilitate a "movement" is all too relevant in this presidential election year. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member humerous commentary on our social media society. And a fitting tribute to the small town of Liberty, NY Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolute trash. I found it just as annoying as people who actually care about likes and becoming popular. This is a prime example of shit satire. Sorry David Cross, this was a fail. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member The film mostly takes place in the ironically named small town of Liberty, New York. A local man, at odds with the town council, unknowingly has a video of him being ejected from a council meeting go viral. When a NYC hipster collective gets wind of his troubles, they travel to the town to help him. While many people may only see this as a drama, this was the absolute most laugh-out-loud, clever film I've seen in a long while. The set dressing and costumes were top-notch. The critique on modern American celebrity culture, with its reality stars and viral YouTube videos is biting. David Cross directs while featuring Matt Walsh, Michael Cera, David Koechner, Amy Sedaris, Erinn Hayes, Russ Tamblyn, & Julia Stiles! BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! David Rooney Hollywood Reporter Hits: a frequently funny but easy-prey satire about America's obsession with fame, displaying a small-screen sensibility that extends from its joke setups to its boxy visuals. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Katherine Kilkenny indieWire Plagued with uneven pacing and tone, "Hits" feels more like a rant. Rated: C Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Unfortunately, by the end, thanks to a misguided use of a few offensive slurs against gays and African Americans, the whole thing turns needlessly ugly, undermining the goodwill Cross had mustered. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Cameron Ward One Room With A View Considerably well-written throughout, Hits' only fault lies in its lamentable withholding of some of the more substantial elements of its tongue-in-cheek narrative statement. Rated: 3/5 Jun 11, 2019 Full Review Joey Keeton The Daily Dot Hits misses the mark, but there's evidence he's capable of something great. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation Looking back on this 2014 viral fame satire from the vantage point of 2018, it's still not a great comedy. But it is a prophetic one.
