On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village's quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup's friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.

Dina Kaur Arizona Republic Thames is an incredible actor and this felt like a role he was meant to play. Both, to me, are above-average bits of children’s entertainment that struggle with the same problems. In this case, though, if you need something to do with your kids this weekend, you can save a lot of money by staying home and watching the original How to Train Your Dragon together. Jun 20, 2025 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) The live-action deftly delivers wit, charm, laughs, and tears, all while showing us the majesty of the winged creatures and the rough-and-tumble Vikings that provide so much personality and depth to a coming-of-age story about acceptance and change. BrerFox We were a little hesitant going in because our family is a big fan of the original animated film series but we ended up being pleasantly surprised. The live action film is able to stand on its own, while paying tribute and being respectful of the source material. The new actors make the roles their own and were looking forward to seeing where they take the next films. It doesnt replace the original film but sits along side it as something special in its own right. A fun afternoon at the movies with the family.
