Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Bill Oberst Jr. truly shines. Rated: 3.5/4.0 Sep 26, 2020 Full Review Tracy Allen PopHorror.com You won't find anything mind-blowing in this film, but if you're a fan of the mighty Bigfoot, you'll probably enjoy this one. Rated: 5/10 Aug 9, 2019 Full Review Amie Simon Three Imaginary Girls A retro-feeling-stuck-out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere monster flick ... except instead of CGI'ing the heck out of everything, it relies on some pretty boss practical effects. Mar 2, 2019 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com Anticipation for mayhem becomes a weirdly prolonged waiting game for anything of note to happen, with Portanova almost reluctant to build on the material's B-movie foundation. TheMovieSearch R Hunting Grounds is one of those movies you know is going to be rough from the moment you see the poster — but curiosity gets the better of you anyway. I went in wondering if it would give me something terrifying: a Sasquatch, a creature lurking in the shadows, maybe even a Bigfoot horror story that could surprise me. Unfortunately, what I got instead was a complete disappointment from start to finish. The film never delivers on any of its potential. The screenplay is half-baked and utterly directionless, meandering through scenes that feel disconnected and hollow. There’s no tension, no real build-up, and worst of all, no payoff. It’s as if the script was written around the idea of a monster movie but forgot to actually include the heart or fear that such a film requires. Every time it starts to hint at something exciting, it pulls back into dull, meaningless conversations or clumsy attempts at emotional depth that don’t land. The direction doesn’t help either. It feels as though the filmmaker had a vague vision — maybe a mix of mystery and wilderness horror — but had no idea how to bring it to life. The tone is all over the place, the pacing is painfully slow, and the cinematography does nothing to elevate the material. It’s not even “so bad it’s fun” — it’s just bad. You can almost sense that the director was trying to make something out of nothing, but what came through on screen was confusion, not creativity. Then there’s the acting, which is easily one of the weakest parts of the film. The performances are flat, emotionless, and sometimes downright awkward. None of the characters feel believable, and the dialogue feels forced and unnatural. There’s no chemistry, no genuine fear, no real sense of urgency — just a group of actors going through the motions in a story that gives them nothing to work with. By the time the movie reaches its conclusion, whatever little suspense it tried to build has completely evaporated. The ending isn’t shocking, scary, or satisfying — it’s just another reminder of how far off the rails the film went. Hunting Grounds had the opportunity to be a decent creature feature, maybe even a cult hit if handled right, but instead it collapses under its own lack of direction, heart, and storytelling ability. I wouldn’t recommend this film to anyone. It’s dull, poorly written, and painfully executed. If you decide to watch it out of curiosity, I genuinely feel sorry for you — because I did the same thing, and I can promise it’s an experience you’ll want to forget immediately. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/25 Full Review Audience Member My wife and I watched this whole movie on Roku ... I have no idea why ... It started out with nice HD and they grew into one stupid poorly acted scene to the next. The writer, actors, and script should be taken out and burned in the back yard. By the end of the movie, we were cheering for the monsters and laughing it was so hard to imagine that people spent money to make this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I actually find it difficult to put it into words how awful this film is....from the predictable story, the awful acting and the end....wut. Just terrible. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Decent Bigfoot flick. Nice work centering on the damaged relationship between the father and son.
