Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle An insightful document that recognized the strains, pitfalls and hypocrisies of the sexual revolution even as it was beginning. Rated: 3/4 Mar 17, 2016 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times While it's hardly subtle, it is compelling. Feb 5, 2016 Full Review Michael Atkinson Village Voice Pietrangeli's neglected autopsy of modern showbiz culture would be a satire if it were funny - instead, and despite the bouncy vigor of its star, the movie's narrative goes down like gelato and then slowly clots in your throat. Feb 2, 2016 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Stefania Sandrelli gives an effortless performance as the charming young woman who is interested in being desired but not quite sure of what is desirable. Rated: 4/5 Oct 9, 2020 Full Review Austin Trunick Under the Radar A fine motion picture, although Sandrelli's performance is its only truly eye-opening feature. Rated: 6/10 Mar 6, 2016 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk Adriana's essential vacuity, central as it is the film's point, doesn't give us enough to hold onto, so by the time the narrative is winding its way to its climax, everything has blurred into one long rush of nothing. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 2, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews

mike l An absolutely beautiful film in every category. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Classic story of the reality of being perceived as beautiful. This movie made a shocking impact on me. Soundtrack is fabulous. If you don't know Italian, see it with subtitles. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review david f Kind of a pop time capsule of postwar Italy and some of the culture from that time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review s r A beautiful woman tries to be a successful actress. Somber and real, but you can't help cheering for her. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It is NOT in English. It seemed too long. I was mostly on fast forward and I did not see the point of the movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A lost classic of 60s Italian cinema that's every bit as innovative and meaningful as its contemporaries (La Dolce Vita, Red Desert). The film looks at the struggles of an upcoming starlet, but it becomes clear very soon that the film isn't so interested in general storytelling. Director Pietrangeli take a vignette-esque approach to the narrative, and employs an editing style that was quite frankly decades ahead of its time. Doing so, the film touches on a wealth of themes concerning post-war Italy, patriarchy, and class struggles all while being an extraordinarily lush and entertaining film. Also, bravo to star Stefania Sandrelli, who appears in almost every shot in the film, and always remains unpredictably vibrant. Amust-see during its week-long run at Film Forum.
