Ray K This movie was trying for something interesting, and had some great cinematography, but it fell flat on the story. There are two stories competing for screentime, and in my opinion the more interesting story lost out. The rest of this review is very spoiler heavy, so proceed with caution - all in all, if you wanted a movie that covers this topic, this is not the film to scratch that itch. We have a story of an immigrant who's best friend is captured, and who risks his sanctuary to save their friend, and instead most of the focus is given to Katie, a girl in new york who is upset her partner is being cagey about what's going on. We're directed to empathize with her character and the creeping sense of seperation forming, but during the movie while Katie is struggling with the feeling of becoming distant, Ali is focused and weighed down by getting deported and lossing another of his small group of friends to the terrorism they face. I find it hard to empathize with Katie, especially after she's told the problem she makes the choice of going behind her partners backs and taking the money they earned to give to the kidnappers. When Ali gets deported, she uproots her entire life to go with him, without him knowing. Ali had been cagey due to a fear that these problems would weigh on her and cause her to take drastic actions without considering consequences, and sure enough I believe he was right. The story comes off as wish fulfillment, disrespectful, and flagrantly naive.
