      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Lightly bittersweet yet deceptively deep, In the City of Sylvia is just seductive enough to distract viewers from its more problematic elements.

Audience Member There's not a lot of dialogue in this film, but it's poetry is in the lovely cinematography surrounding the search for a lost acquaintance. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member It's slow even by art house standards. An oddly warm and sensuous film about memory and a missed connection. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member It's very hard to review this movie in words because of the emotional bridge it uses to connect to its audience. There's an stage in a healing process when you should shut down your processor and start observing your world to find where you fit in. And that is exactly what's happening in this movie in a very delicate way. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Surprisingly engaging. Very little dialogue but intense all the same. Art in movie form it needs attention as in a art gallery and you have to keep an open mind and more often than not assume things, some of which are proven eventually. Not for everyone but those who watch will be rewarded. Pure cinema as someone said in a review. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Though almost without conversation, "In the City of Sylvia" is sweet, romantic, atmospheric, beautiful, and haunting. A pure cinematic fantasy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Ya, sangat membius memang visualisasi yang ditampilkan film ini. Tapi saya merasa filmnya tidak berkembang baik dari segi cerita maupun akting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Empire Magazine Rated: 4/5 Mar 13, 2009 Full Review Nathan Lee New York Times If nothing else, Mr. Guerin has neatly captured the sweet, erotic alienation of being a single man at his leisure in a foreign town, dazzled by the passing procession of local beauties. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 12, 2008 Full Review David Fear Time Out The director's near-silent tour of quaint European street scenes is even more adept at making the picturesque seem pretentious, as well as at reminding you that male-model good looks don't make antisocial behavior any less creepy. Rated: 3/6 Dec 10, 2008 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Guerin brilliantly blurs the line between infatuation, voyeurism, stalking and the narcissistic beat of an eternal youth culture. Jun 1, 2020 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row Guerin draws the audience in with an intoxicating simplicity, linking together images, sounds, and music that add up to something uniquely magical. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 5, 2019 Full Review C.J.
