Frances H Unusual and fascinating film about a woman trying to study native culture in the Pacific with wonderful cinematography and fine acting. I really enjoyed it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/11/18 Full Review Audience Member I actually love this film, its wonderfully paced and the actors are amazing. I only wish I could get it on dvd in Australia...it needs more attention, as does Rufus Sewell. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked this movie. It's a fascinating (and surprisingly rather un-PC) look at life and race relations in what was still colonial times. The white anthropologists are in New Guinea to study a local native tribe and the whole portrayal of the whites on the island is how you would expect colonial whites to have really behaved. It's set at the outbreak of WW2, and there's no cultural egalitarianism in this movie. There's romance, conflict, a dose of feminism, and eventually the Japanese invade the island and the whites flee. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member the setting is evocative of a paul bowles or w. somerset maughm story. perfect role for rufus sewell. i am a fan of martin donovan, but he isn't very charming in this role. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it!!! It is beautiful, interesting and impressive. Hope I can find it on dvd or something. Would love to watch again Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
