L Dwight M This is a gripping account of 5 US Cavalry troopers risking their lives to save 400 cavalry horses from slaughter as the American Army switched from horses to mechanized units. Critics point out that no order can be found given by General McArthur to destroy 500 horses as a cost savings as he tried to catch up with Germany and Japan’s modernized military. However, from the outset Lieutenant Buxton questioned his commanding officer, demanding to see the actual order. He argued that these horses had been in combat and that the written orders of all cavalry troopers was to preserve the lives of their mounts. The script says Lieutenant Buxton was the son of a decorated Colonel Buxton who us a historical figure. Near the ending, President Roosevelt forced General McArthur to reverse his order and to pardon the 5 calvary troopers. A contingent of mounted RCMP officers allows the troopers to drive the horses across the river border from Montana into Canada. By that time the American public had become aware of the progress of the horses being herded ft Texas to Montana so the RCMP certainly would be at the border. Not surprising to me as a former member of the RCMP that the mounted police would agree to give sanctuary to these horses and men they would not likely write up a controversy between the two governments militaries. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Michael W This HBO movie was great. Don Johnson, Craig Sheffer, Gabrielle Anwar, Rod Steiger, Bob Gunton, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. This true story about Army soldiers protecting horses from being slaughtered by their own men was dramatic, inspirational, and heartfelt. It's about defending your honor and protecting what you love. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a must see.
