Audience Member "Der Hai" (the Shark) keeps London in suspence. Not only Scotland Yard tries to find the unknown person, who kills with a harpoon, dressed in a neoprene suit. The underworld is also eager to know who that person is. Most low lifes are employed by the Shark, they fulfill their orders, but they also try to betray the Shark. Inspector Wade (Joachim Fuchsberger) starts to investigate. And he starts with a dockside bar called "Mekka". Nelly Oaks (Elisabeth Flickenschildt), the owner of the bar, seems to be just as much involved with the dark deeds of the Shark, as the obscure Gregor Gubanow (Klaus Kinski), who claims to be a spice trader. Mr. Brown (Heinz Engelmann), and old aquaintance of Mrs. Oaks, appears and he is not only the captain of a huge ship, he is also interested in Mrs. Oaks' niece Leila (Brigitte Grothum). And so is the handsome Inspector Wade. But what is the whole killing-crusade of the Shark about? Just about getting more profit out of Whiskey-smuggling? Or is it about an enormous, long forgotten heritage? Through thick fog and darkness, distracted by reflexions on the water, the hunting for the Shark claims many victims. Gully cover open itself, hands in shiny black gloves appear out of nothing and gorgeous little details make this movie a real treat for the eyes. Like the bardoor, who has a real bar as a clasp, or the cigarette-holder, in shape of a hand, with a net glove on. I was really surprised, who the Shark was. Inspector Wade found it out before me, and I am not used to that! I love the Edgar Wallace movies from the 60's. And I bet it must have been a wonderful experience to watch the movies in cinema then. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Of all the 32 Films in the German Edgar Wallace series, this one is my absolute favorite one. It is also the one to have the most sucess at the box office. There are no mysterious old mansions or creepy costumed killers. Only a smoky, filthy old Inn at the river Thames (in reality the River Elbe in Hamburg, Germany)and a Killer in diving gear who commits his murders with a harpoon. The cast is perfect down to the smallest speaking part. And for the first time the credits started with the classic line "Hallo, hier spricht Edgar Wallace" (Hello, this is Edgar wallace speaking), followed by pistole and machine gun shots wich riddle the screene turn into blood and the name Edgar Wallace.
