Manohla Dargis New York Times "Insiang" is as much a national captivity narrative as it is a very specific suffering-woman saga (with shades of the classic maternal melodrama). Oct 27, 2015 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker This intense, furious melodrama, by the Filipino director Lino Brocka, fuses its narrative energy with documentary veracity. Oct 26, 2015 Full Review Nick Schager Slant Magazine Lino Brocka's portrait of familial treachery and societal abandonment channels its melodrama through the filter of neorealism. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 24, 2015 Full Review Ryan Oquiza Sinegang Every frame of this film epitomizes the deteriorating conditions the slums had to endure under Marcos’s dictatorship in the '70s. It’s a social realist venture into the very soul of the Filipino people in a time replete with turmoil. Rated: 5/5 Aug 18, 2023 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse "Insiang" is a masterpiece, a film that truly highlights how melodrama can be a work of high art and not just a tearjerker. Dec 20, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Lisa supplies Insiang with its palpable dramatic tension in what plays like a Filipino version of Mommie Dearest. Their interactions eventually veer into exploitation territory, but Brocka's film resists camp aesthetics. Rated: 4/5 Sep 9, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

S R A painful, tragic and frustrating drama / melodrama. I appreciated it for its frankness in confronting slum issues and revenge. It was sad, yet powerful. Saw on TCM. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/24 Full Review Audience Member the movie depicts poverty that is the root of cruelty and violence. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member first pinoy film shown in cannes... kaya lang.. pag makarinig na ako ng tumutulong tubig sa gripo.. may naiimagine na ako bwahahah Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Insiang is a sensitively genuine delineation of the life in the slums. With metaphorical resonance, the heroine's strife mirrors that of every individual whose every action is dictated by his or her socioeconomic landscape. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member The plot synopsis sells revenge; what it doesn't sell, however, are the devastating effects that it can inflict in oneself as a double-edged sword. Of course that we can trace revenge back to classic literature in the B.C. era, and it is an element that modern films, especially Asia, have restored with a focus of escapism and style, sometimes portraying violence as an art. Insiang doesn't. Insiang punches you in the face with descriptive neorealism and emotional violence, rather than with graphic violence, which is kept in a second layer. 98/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Other than the 5+ minute really loud and annoying opening, this movie was pretty good! The story was crazy! I felt bad for insiang at times, then had no sympathy for her at all, back to feeling sorry. I hated all the background noise but it was shot in 76 and maybe they Edited the best they could. Or maybe they wanted all that excess awfulness, who knows. I liked the movie though.
