Audience Member Any film on the Third Reich succeeds or fails based on the performance of Hitler and his larger than life subordinates. We should be in good hands with Derek Jacobi but he gives in a surprisingly passionless performance that would leave an uninformed viewer wondering what on earth Hitler did that was so bad. The Nazis in general seem like not unreasonable blokes, which really undermines the moral point of the film: that Albert Speer was a relatively amoral man with occasional spurts of conscience among immoral men. Hauer is wonderful in the part, which makes it a shame that the film doesn't give many opportunities to do anything with it.
