Tara Brady Irish Times Sahar Dowlatshahi, an actor who can emote with just gaze and eyebrows, beautifully complements [writer-director Behnam Behzad's] nuanced approach. Rated: 4/5 Jun 6, 2017 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) Dolatshahi is compelling as a woman torn between familial duty and self-determination, coming alive in one particular clothes-shop confrontation. Rated: 3/5 May 21, 2017 Full Review Amy Bowker Little White Lies A thoughtful meditation on female agency in contemporary Tehran. Rated: 4/5 May 19, 2017 Full Review Nick Evan-Cook One Room With A View Plainly directed and framed, and dramatically rather unengaging... Rated: 2/5 Apr 3, 2019 Full Review Stephen Porzio Film Ireland Magazine Inversion feels like a neo-realist movie. The settings appear tangible and authentic. The actors disappear into their characters. There is no soundtrack, just the noise of radios and ringtones. May 26, 2017 Full Review Tom Birchenough The Arts Desk The elements of drama are strong, and give the film's closely observed scenes -- even when a touch of melodrama slips in, Inversion is still very much a work of realism -- their power. brent m Though somber and slow-moving at times, this 2016 domestic drama from Iranian writer-director Behnam Behzadi (now available for streaming) spotlights the attempts at imposing economic, career and living arrangement decisions on single women by their families, especially those who are married, and by men in particular. Such is the life faced by Niloofar Pirasteh (Sahar Dowlatshahi), a responsible, self-reliant, unmarried career woman when she's arbitrarily saddled with the primary care of her aging, health-challenged mother by her two elder siblings, who claim family and financial responsibilities as the reasons for not stepping up to do more. To complicate matters, mother's doctor recommends that she move out of Tehran due to its severe smog problems and the impact they have on her severe respiratory issues, a relocation that will necessitate Niloofar having to pick up and move as well, unwillingly forcing her to leave her life and business behind. The result is a build-up of stress, anger and frustration that's about to burst in a culture where such venting by women is rare and looked upon with shock and disdain. This story of inspiring assertiveness in the face of unfair oppressive conditions is sure to light a fire under those who may otherwise be reluctant to do so, one that makes an impassioned case for fairness, courtesy and equal consideration, regardless of one's gender and/or marital status. Truly an uplifting tale for women everywhere who feel needlessly put upon in simply trying to live their lives. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Iran is not the only culture in which the care for an elderly, ailing parent tends to be left to the unmarried sister, whose chances for a career and for founding a family of her own diminish in the process. Inversion questions the assumptions that help married siblings justify the unequal distribution of the burden of care. It shows how people deceive themselves and others in justifying their self-serving behaviour. A compelling performance by a brilliant cast, whose portrayal is both sensitive and authentic.
