Critics Consensus

Iron Mask unites Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger for a bizarrely misguided adventure that aims for epic fantasy with unintentionally hilarious results.

I wouldn't say you have to have seen the first instalment to enjoy it: in fact, an unfamiliarity with the general concept of cinema would probably help, if anything. Go to Full Review

[A]t least two-thirds of Iron Mask is funny on purpose. The rest, however, is eventually dragged down by compounding inertia. Go to Full Review

Those of us who enjoy brainless entertainment will enjoy Iron Mask...it’s a daft, family-friendly romp that’s sold on the back of two very big star names, but provides plenty of silly fun for those keen for a fix of fresh-air escapism... Go to Full Review

Asian films are usually better than their American and European counterparts so I went into this film hoping for fantasy offered in such films as the Detective Yee franchise, but got the reverse, a garish “Pirates of the Caribbean” vibe Go to Full Review

The opening chapters are pretty funny, with these masters of action battling it out in the Tower and dropping bon mots. But TBH I'm lost for the late chapters. Go to Full Review

@Loneakuma 1d Iron Mask is one of those films that feels like it should have been twice as long just to make sense. The plot is messy and confusing, jumping between storylines without direction or purpose. It often feels as though they cut out two hours of footage that might’ve explained what’s going on. The acting doesn’t help much either. Even big names like Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger can’t save it from wooden performances and awkward line delivery. The voice dubbing is especially poor — characters’ lips and voices are constantly out of sync, making the film even harder to take seriously. When you learn that the film is a Chinese-Russian co-production, some of the strange choices around tone and dialogue start to make a bit more sense; it’s caught between several filmmaking styles that never quite fit together. Overall, Iron Mask feels like a big-budget fantasy adventure that lost its focus somewhere between Moscow, Beijing, and the editing room. See more Dyrck L 08/25/2024 Terrible—bad acting, ludicrous plot and made by Russian and Chinese production companies, so we really shouldn't be supporting them anyway.
