Critics Consensus

Ironclad serves up plenty of crunchy gore to sate action aficionados, but the sketchy story clunks like a suit of ill-fitting armor.

Tom Long Detroit News Ironclad is as weighed-down as it sounds. Rated: C- Jul 8, 2011 Full Review Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch As a critic who complains about painless and brainless action movies, I hoist a glass of mead to the men and maidens of "Ironclad." Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 8, 2011 Full Review R.L. Shaffer IGN DVD Terrific action spectacle and a great tattered and beaten performance from Paul Giamatti, but the film is largely lifeless and dull. Joe H As usual, it's better than the scores given Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Claudio C Ironclad (2011) Great Epic Based on True Events (11,741 – 03 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In the Thirteenth Century, in England, the loathsome King John of England (Paul Giamatti) brings a powerful army of Danish mercenaries to retrieve his kingdom, disrespecting the Carta Magna he signed after three years of war. When Abbott Marcus (Marcus Hoyland) arrives at Darnay Castle with three Templar Knights seeking shelter during a stormy night, Baron Darnay gives shelter to them. However, in the morning, King John arrives with his army and mercenaries, hangs the Baron, cuts Marcus’ tongue and kills two Templar Knights that defended him. However, the Templar Thomas Marshal (James Purefoy) escapes with Marcus, who is already dead, and heads to Canterbury, where he meets Archbishop Langton (Charles Dance) and Baron William d'Aubigny (Brian Cox). The later tells them that the Pope has allied to King John. They agree that King John must be stopped at Rochester Castle. Otherwise, the southern of England and London will be taken by him and England will fall. The Baron rides with Marshal and his squire Guy (Aneurin Barnard) and summons three friends that fought with him in the war to join him, Gil Becket (Jason Flemyng), Daniel Marks (Mackenzie Crook) and Joseph Wulfstan (Rhys Parry Jones), and the smalltime criminal Jedediah Coteral (Jamie Foreman) that he released. When they arrive at Rochester Castle, they claim the castle for the rebellion and Baron Reginald de Cornhill (Derek Jacobi) is forced to bestow. The castle has no moat but is reinforced and now the seven warriors plus the eleven soldiers of the baron must resist the position under siege of King John until the arrival of the French army to help them. But they do not know that the French have called off the deal expecting a better agreement. “Ironclad” (2011) is a great epic based on true events. The plot is engaging, with awesome battle scenes, a fictitious romance with the gorgeous Kate Mara, and a spectacular cast, with Brian Cox, Paul Giamatti, Kate Mara, James Purefoy and Charles Dance among other names. The realism of the battle is brutal and gore, and the locations and costumes give the sensation of the medieval period, with dirt and dark places, people and clothing. My vote is eight. Title (Brazil): “Sangue e Honra” (”Blood and Honor”) My Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/03/25 Full Review nicokush 4 Barely passed for me was enjoyable to watch but didnt really make me feel anything.. Still a decent medieval movie to watch. i wouldn't skip it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/24/24 Full Review Richard L The amazingly talented cast of this low-budget medieval romp is wasted on a simplistic script so poorly directed it feels like a school play. Marred by inexplicable poor camera work and editing, even outside of the disjointed action scenes, a scale that couldn't be done justice at its budget, and a completely misplaced and unnecessary romance subplot, Ironclad is only worth watching for the medieval completionist. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review steve d It isn't quite as good as the story should be because it focuses too much on the fighting. It is still really interesting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A brash exploitation medieval B-movie (medsploitation?) starring Paul Giamatti as a frankly insane King John, and Brian Cox as the leader of a group of the Knights Templar, it sounds like it could be fun. And in fits and bursts it's just that; set amongst the settling dust of the Magna Carta signing, King John decides to renegade on the agreement and retake control of his country. To have a chance of doing this he needs to take Rochester Castle, a strategically key location to access the rest of the country. The Knights Templar are sent by Archbishop Langton, author of the Magna Carter to stop King John and hold Rochester Castle, hopefully with the eventual help of the French. What follows is essentially a siege movie, with some violent battle sequences that you'd naturally expect. What Ironclad lacks however, is a sense of substance that you may have got with someone like Ridley Scott (on Gladiator [2000] form rather than Kingdom Of Heaven [2005]) or indeed Wolfgang Peterson. Paul Giamatti's King John is a joy to watch, but more for comedic value rather than for any degree of genuine menace; falling well short of Alan Rickman's momentous Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Brian Cox is everything you'd expect of him and there are some enjoyable cameos here and there. Ironclad does what it says on the tin (you kind of know where you are from the producers of 300 [2006]) but if you want something more opulent, you'd be better off going elsewhere.
