Bob MacAvoy (John Forsythe) and his pregnant wife, Jane (Loretta Young), are tired of the hectic life they lead in New York City. Bob abandons his successful position as a reporter to move with Jane to a little town in California, where he buys the struggling weekly newspaper. Their city ways clash with the traditional small-town mores of their new neighbors. Bob then orchestrates a scheme to increase circulation, which only gets the hopelessly cosmopolitan couple into more trouble.
