Critics Consensus

It Comes at Night makes lethally effective use of its bare-bones trappings while proving once again that what's left unseen can be just as horrifying as anything on the screen.

Kambole Campbell One Room With A View It Comes at Night is a powerful, slow-burning horror, a distressing and nihilistic examination of human nature that lingers in the mind long after the shocking denouement. Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer The movie has its flaws. But one of Shults's main triumphs is to get us to believe in the danger of the outside world as fiercely as his characters do. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Jason Anderson Sight & Sound Shults's adoption of a more vicious mode sharpens his already discomfiting take on families in states of extreme duress in his debut feature Krisha. Jul 19, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson "It Comes at Night" is tightly comprised of excruciating moral challenges that escalate with time. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Writer/director Trey Edward Shults builds so much tension with such vague storytelling, and I loved every bit of the ambiguity and metaphorical message it provides. Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s an unconventional horror picture. It’s a deep emotional treatment of loss. It’s a troubling, unorthodox coming-of-age story. The cool thing is how well Trey Shults packages all these things together without an ounce of conflict. Rated: 4/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Dashawn Pretty good movie, not a conventional horror, I’d have to say I was more anxious than scared Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Robert R The writers were like “Here’s what we’re gonna do..let’s make a horror movie about…nothing and make nothing happen to people and not explain why anything in the movie happens at all” then the critics saw it and were like “this is incredible!” And the REST of the world saw it like “ I could’ve been doing dishes or anything else instead of watching that nonsense”……..that pretty much sums it up. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Audience Member Fucking garbage. Critics are morons for thinking this is good. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Dean E I was curious to see what comes at night, absolutely nothing came. I wasted 97 minutes of my life. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Jeremiah J First: this movie is nothing like the depiction within the trailer. If you watch the trailer and then think this is a typical horror film, you wouldn't be wrong. But it's not a typical horror film, more of an artistic horror heavy on looking at social norms put to extremes. Second: great acting all around, during the crucial moments where choices are made, you see and feel the weight the characters are experiencing. I think this movie is made on the crucial choices that occur throughout the film and seeing that weight on the characters, brilliant. Third: interesting way that it's filmed. The film doesn't tell you how to feel about the moments that unfold. Almost done in journalistic or documentary style. The moments unfold as they do and the audience is left to decide if choices were right/wrong or if there even was a right/wrong choice to be made. Fourth: as most of the other reviews point out, the ending is sudden and filled with unanswered questions. Again, this is left for the audience to decide. This, of course, can be very unsatisfying. But if you don't mind pondering unanswered questions, this might be for you. Fifth: the one flaw I see is a lack of science. Without spoiling, the antagonist within this film is extremely unlikely. Now I think it has to exist for the story to be the way it was, but I also think there could have been other ways to tell the same story but w/ a more realistic antagonist. This is just my persnickety mind picking at the one unrealistic aspect to a film full of realistic depictions of humans in extreme circumstances Really, this comes down to this movie being a different horror flick. If you don't mind sitting through or appreciating a foreign or independent artsy film, this one is probably for you. If, on the other hand, you find those to be boring or unsatisfying, this movie probably isn't for you. This movie isn't for everyone, but for the movie it is, it is done well. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Jose D Great acting but there is nothing satisfying about this movie. You’re left with so many questions, theirs no reward at the end of it and it could’ve been cut down by 15 minutes. Not worth your time Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
