This film should have been far, far better. It was directed by Claudia Weill, whose 1978 "Girlfriends" has stood the test of time as a moving exploration of female friendship and ambition. And the cast is superb, with none other than Jill Clayburgh, one of the greatest actresses of the late 20th century, in the lead role. So what goes wrong? A preposterous plot, dialogue that ranges from stilted to cretinous, and a grating, sappy theme song. Worth watching if you are a Jill Clayburgh fan or interested in what movie studio heads thought "feminism" meant back in 1980.

Pretty good, but predictable romantic comedy. The cast is a big plus, especially Charles Grodin. Professionally made. Good support from Beverly Garland. Enjoyable, good script. For being 27 years old it has held up very well over time.
