Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times All I can tell you about Clint Eastwood in Joe Kidd is that he plays a ruthless gunman of few words. This isn't exactly a surprise... The funny thing about Joe Kidd, though, is that we can't keep straight whose side he's on, or why. Rated: 2/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills ...a mediocrity... Dec 4, 2020 Full Review James Clay Fresh Fiction Scripted by Elmore Leonard, this breezy open-air Western finds a formidable punch against masculinity by questioning the need for power while being supremely entertaining and never straying from Eastwood's clinched-jaw aesthetic. Rated: B Nov 19, 2020 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Colorfully played by character actors Don Stroud, James Wainwright, and Paul Koslo, the villainous sidekicks spark the proceedings and provide Eastwood's hero with interesting antagonists. Rated: 3/4 Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com It's lesser Eastwood (and Leonard and Sturges), but it's impossible to squash the spirit of the work, which carries the film far enough to satisfy basic needs from the genre, making it a lark, but a convincing one. Rated: B Apr 20, 2014 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid It's still a prime example of a good, sturdy bread-and-butter Western. May 1, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews

Jay W "Joe Kidd" marks the end of an era for Clint Eastwood. This marks the final Western film he would do that he wouldn't direct himself. This one was directed by John Sturges, director of "the Magnificent Seven". By the 70's Western films were on their way out. But with the trail already blazed by John Ford and Sergio Leone, "Joe Kidd" refines all the fundamentals of a Western and packs them into an enjoyable tight package. Clint Eastwood plays the titular Joe Kidd. Working opposite him is Robert Duvall, the same year he'd appear in some gangster film. These two characters are what anchor this film, they do an excellent job working off each other. The cast of villains all have time to shine. The action is diverse and well shot. The music and suspense are timed just right. But what holds it all together is the emotional journey Joe Kidd goes on. I'm not Joe Kidding, this is a great western. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Brian F A good western starring Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall and John Saxon. A good amount of action keeps the film moving well. The acting was very good. Great scenery as it was filmed at "Old Tucson" in Arizona. A rare western in which Eastwood is clean shaven, he usually had the cool beard look as in "Fistful of Dollars." Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review CodyZamboni Z Solid, exciting, Western, with impressive location photography, Eastwood brings his star power to his little talk, big action hero, His performance is matched by villain Robert Duvall, I liked the smartly staged action, the top notch supporting cast, and the memorable film score. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Franky L A little slow starting, but a good Clint Eastwood tough cowboy film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review KB B It's a good western with good action. I must admit I liked the Fistfull of Dollars trilogy a little better. I also always preferred Eastwood westerns to John Wayne's. It's definitely worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Liam D An underrated western starring Clint Eastwood (Pink Cadillac, Kelly's Heroes) with smooth direction by John Sturges (Ice Station Zebra, Marooned) and a great supporting cast lead by Robert Duvall (The Handmaid's Tale, The Detective) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
