Steve D The acting is strong and the dialog smart. Something seems to be missing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Audience Member This a interesting story, pretty good one too, I like almost everything about it, nice lighting by Harry, good character actors, the one major thing that drags this down is the lead casting of Raft, just imagine if Robert Ryan was the lead, RKO contract actor, I think it would rate higher on the noir scale, unfortunately Raft is not very good and in my opinion only fair to good when he is a character actor Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member He's impossible. Johnny Angel tracks down his dad's missing ship only to discover everyone onboard has been murdered, including his father the captain, and the gold cargo has been stolen. He swears to spend the rest of his life getting to the bottom of who is responsible. He encounters a strange dame that has suffered her own loss who may know where the gold is. If Johnny can find the gold, he may be able to find those responsible for stealing it and killing his father. "There's two things I've never had enough of, money and you, Johnny." Edwin Marin, director of Colt 45, A Christmas Carol (1938), Tall in the Saddle, Abilene Town, Invisible Agent, Race Street, and Married Before Breakfast, delivers Johnny Angel. The storyline for this picture is just okay and fairly straightforward. The acting is solid as are the settings. The cast includes George Raft, Signe Hasso, Claire Trevor, and Mack Gray. "There's not one living thing on the ship." Johnny Angel was a movie I came across on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and decided to DVR. This was an interesting picture with some nice character interactions and dialogue, but this was far from a classic or must see. I'd only watch this if nothing else was on. "What's your brand of violence, honey?" Grade: C Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A fair to good B film noir I have seen better and I have seen worse film noir good cast makes movie more fun to watch Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member I seem to remember reading that this film was a favorite of Jean-Luc Godard. In this non-typical film noir, George Raft plays a ship captain investigating the murder of his sea captain father. Stylishly directed by Edwin L. Marin, which is name I've never really taken note of, although he'd did direct a few entertaining films I'd seen, including "Tall in the Saddle" and "Mr. Ace". Raft has gives another of his usual wooden performances, which is good if you like Raft. It's not a classic noir, but it's pretty darn good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Hard-boiled personal investigation from George Raft with shades of Bogart in his performance.
