Megan e Chastain's performance in her first movie is very good - 3.5 stars! However the film itself was rather pointless with Chastain's character having very little agency. The story seemed to highlight the objectification of women, but not in a critical way. It's a pass for me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/18/23 Full Review steve d Often uncomfortable and melodramatic. Jessica Chastain is the lone bright spot showing signs of the star she will become. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Only watched cause gave 3 stars out 4 on tv and it had a young Jessica (thing for hot red heads, lol). The acting was good said it followed book (didn't read it) but Jessica did go to Juliard so not a shock at her acting and Chaz is from my family Bronx neighborhood. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review wendy h Oh act III. How I miss you. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review kevin c Jessica Chastain's character Jolene is an orphan who marries young, but an indiscretion destroys that and she constantly finds herself traveling around reinventing herself doing what she has to to get by. Phenomenal performance from Chastain which lifts this movie from a mediocre melodrama to something much better than it would have been. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is one of those rare movies that gets better and better the longer you watch. My first thought was "What a life she's had!", but not all of her life was good. She made some really bad choices and they changed her life in dramatic ways. At first I thought she was really naive for the choices she made, but after a while I began to feel sorry for her. Great performances by everyone and the scenes of Vegas and the Southwest were beautiful. When the screen went black and the credits began to roll, I was disappointed because I wanted more. Jolene is an amazing woman-and this is an amazing movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times More epic than it needs to be and less profound than it should be, "Jolene" remains a watchable excursion into human frailty and foibles. Rated: 3/5 Nov 4, 2010 Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times Chastain proves near-heroic embodying Jolene's innate strength and incremental wisdom. Yet she also makes us understand how the heroine's wobbly resistance to manipulative characters is overwhelmed time and again. Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 4, 2010 Full Review Glenn Heath Jr. Slant Magazine Jolene's main themes, including the manipulation of youth, the fragility of love, and the suppression of individuality, try to carry the wonky dialogue into complex territory. Rated: 1/4 Oct 31, 2010 Full Review Lindy West The Stranger (Seattle, WA) It's a mediocre movie with a very nice central performance. Aug 29, 2017 Full Review Brian Orndorf BrianOrndorf.com Cruelly, the display of sorrow never takes command, with most of the film an unsatisfactory soap opera that never seizes an illuminating essence. Rated: C May 3, 2011 Full Review Marcy Dermansky About.com Chastain has long red hair, wide eyes, and an even wider smile. She is Jolene, of course, and she is appealing.
