Joshua Shapiro (James Woods) is a respected writer in England, but his public success masks a troubled upbringing in Montreal's Jewish ghetto. His family was, to say the least, unusual: His mother, Esther (Linda Sorensen), was an exotic dancer, and his father, Reuben (Alan Arkin) a small-time criminal. Using wit and cunning, Joshua climbed the social ladder. But the turmoil of his old life comes rushing back when Joshua returns to Canada with his upper-crust wife, Pauline (Gabrielle Lazure).

James Woods is great in a role that isn't a caricature, and Alan Arkin is hilarious beyond belief. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Funny movie with excellent performances by Woods and Arkin. Satirical in its take of the cross-pollination of class, religion, and culture. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member One of those films that slipped off the radar , while rubbish like terms of endearments gets oscars. Alan Arkin is absolutely brilliant, poor James Woods (although excellent) ends up as a supporting player Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
