Critics Consensus

Boosted by Meryl Streep's charismatic performance as Julia Child, Julie and Julia is a light, but fairly entertaining culinary comedy.

[Amy Adams'] half of the film plays like a below-par rom-com, so here's the question: is the good half good enough? Probably, yes, but then I would watch Meryl rearranging a closet. It's just the way I am. Go to Full Review

Julie & Julia was pure entertainment. The title of this film should be amended to Julie, Julia, & Nora. Nora Ephron's script and direction, along with the performances of Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, add up to one joyous picture. Go to Full Review

152 windows into your sou l Nov 16 It wasn’t until I saw Nora Ephron had written and directed this film – that I decided to give ‘Julie & Julia’ a look, and once again she didn’t disappoint. Nora Ephron was truly gifted – with vision that only she could see and the ability to transfer that vision to film. I’m old enough to remember watching Julia Childs on TV – the bygone days of B&W television, adjusting the ‘rabbit ears’ for the best reception. It was Julia’s unusual yet enthusiastic voice combined with the mundane task of cooking – that struck me as comical in my early years as a kid. Sixty years later, I am now able appreciate Julia Child for the amazing woman she really was - persistent, patient, and talented with a real love of French cuisine. The selection of the actors to fill the roles was perfect as Meryl Streep’s performance as Julia was flawless, with her talent capturing Julia’s voice and mannerisms perfectly. Amy Adams as Julie Powell, conveyed a real passion for both writing and cooking in a way that the viewer can almost taste! Add the unwavering support of both husbands - Stanley Tucci as Julia’s and Chris Messina as Julie’s and you have all the essential ingredients of romance – with some especially touching moments of love and devotion. This movie had the ‘feel’ of some of Nora’s earlier films – blending the unmistakable flavor of New York City with the romantic allure of Paris. Take two hours out of your life and you will truly be rewarded, as there is something in this film for everyone! See more Marit Risto F 10/28/2024 Have wached it many times, and find it entertaining and comforting. I've lived in France, and enjoy the language. And culinary "ways". Don't give it 5 stars though, because it's a bit toothless. But I'll probably keep rewatching it, and have many more delightful times. Bon appétit! See more Read all reviews
