J P @Calumnior 2d It all started when I watched "Sing, Dance, Act: Kabuki featuring Toma Ikuta," and I was like, wow, that was great... if only I could see the actual kabuki they were practicing for! It was so gratifying to discover that the full play was *also* on Netflix. Is it the first kabuki performance to be available to Western audiences on mainstream media? All I know is that I was instantly hooked, and find myself watching it incessantly, especially the scene that ends in the /roppo/ (no spoilers), because... WOW. And I love that it is based on a mid-century manga, making it a perfect blend of modernity and tradition. Ikuta Toma knocks it out of the park in his first kabuki role, and Onoe Matusya proves his extremely versatile talent in putting the show together, in addition to playing three very different roles! And shout-outs to the rest of the cast, who are all brilliant, especially the one who plays Takiyasha Hime. You've made a new kabuki fan in the West! See more Read all reviews
