      Critics Consensus

Well-intentioned but sappy, The Kid & I is a strange hybrid of comedy and cinema verite.

Audience Member Let me set the record straight...The Kid & I is not a good movie. In fact it does almost everything wrong. There is little comedy. The message is muddy. The acting is cringe worthy. Yet for everything that is wrong it is saved by the novelty. Yes critics will bad mouth it just to keep their reputation as cinematic snobs who can only praise movies like Citizen Kane and Casablanca but The Kid & I works because it is a real story. A little background. Eric Gores the actor who plays Aaron Roman really has Cerebral Palsy. He really wanted to be an actor. He really is a fan of the movie True Lies an his father really hired Tom Arnold to write and film a movie with his son. The plot is almost a carbon copy of reality just add a suicidal Arnold. While it will never be hailed for its brilliance (think Adaptation) The Kid & I is a compelling and heartfelt. Hollywood usually is all about ME. What can I get out of it! But for once Hollywood set its ego aside and did something for someone else and it worked. Lou Lumenick New York Post The mesmerizingly awful The Kid & I is a historic first: a comedy about the making of a vanity production that is itself a vanity production. Rated: 1/4 Dec 6, 2005 Full Review Richard Roeper Ebert & Roeper It's terribly uneven, it's far too corny and it's really not all that great, but it's so strange and so compelling that you have to see it. Dec 5, 2005 Full Review Elizabeth Weitzman New York Daily News Tom Arnold does have talent, but some self-defeating streak keeps him from using it. Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 2, 2005 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com Tom Arnold wrote and stars in this heart-on-sleeve "comedy" that will go down in cinema history as one of the most awkward additions ever made to the genre. Rated: D Jun 15, 2009 Full Review Doris Toumarkine Film Journal International Works most poignantly as a testament to a father's love and an unapologetic celebration of Hollywood's m.o.
