Moving to the small town of Dime Box, Texas, under the name of Bickford Warner, he takes any honest work he can find. With the help of a preacher (Peter Boyle) and Reese Ford (Warren Oates), a friend he makes at the local factory, it seems that Bickford may finally be turning his life around. But for Bickford, hard work just may be too hard, especially when there are plenty of trains to rob.

Best yet of the current genre of off-beat Westerns, this whimsical examination of technology and conformity in Dime Box, Texas, 1902, showcases some of the finest acting and writing you’ll see this year. Go to Full Review

Kid Blue has a meandering jug band sensibility and a premise hilariously relevant to Hopper's situation. Go to Full Review

Kid Blue is a well-meaning, liberal, anti-fascist Western, dressed up with some good performances by Peter Boyle, Lee Purcell and Janice Rule. But it's not a very good movie. Go to Full Review

Kid Blue is the kind of film you’ve seen even if you haven’t seen it. It’s not even a particularly brisk stirring of familiar movie making ingredients. Go to Full Review

It was a keen satire of the last of the frontier days, but its hipness failed to rub off on me. Go to Full Review

Justin M. @McFlick5150 1d Kid Blue is an odd film. Starting with a train robbery that is a hilarious and clumsy failure. Setting up for a movie you think is going to be some kind of comedy. But then turns into a coming of age drama with a 35 year old Dennis Hopper playing the titular character. When the film leans into the comedy and wacky stuff it actually works. Once it gets to the melodrama is totally a snooze fest. Warren Oates and Lee Purcell play husband and wife that befriend our delinquent lead. Oates wants to help him be a better man, while Purcell sees a dangerous “young” man, ready to feast on. Those three do bring the film some of best scenes. Western film legend Ben Johnson plays the sheriff who knows the Kid is rotten scoundrel and makes his life hell. Living up to his nickname of ‘Mean John,’ badgering Hooper the whole movie. An unrecognizable pre Young Frankenstein Peter Boyle plays a strung out “preacher.” Who is building a flying machine in prep for the end of the world. Boyle and Johnson steal every scene they’re in. Boyle is giving it all as a young hungry actor. While Johnson knows he’s in a stinker, and just playing the character up to 11. There becomes a love triangle, and the arrival of an old flame. The town being up tight hard workers, finally drives the Kid back to crime. Which leads to a fun final sequence that really bumps the enjoyment up. It’s the tone the movie was searching for the whole time. They finally nail it and then give the film this Looney Tunes-esque freeze frame final shot. With the music and all. It is about Texas train robber Kid Blue who goes straight. Dennis Hopper and Warren Oates give decent performances. The script is a little slow in places. James Frawley did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the humor. I really liked watching Hopper act in this one. It's simple, but sweet. One thing that stands out, he makes a friend at town but his wife turns out to be pretty crazy and causes some interesting drama. It's cute but scary at the same time because there are plenty of people who like to play mind games like that. See more Read all reviews
