Almost nothing works with Killing Mary Sue, which perhaps should’ve been left to the page, as the film is dull, messy, and unpleasant. Go to Full Review

Doesn’t have to recover from tonal whiplash as it never works to begin with, eventually growing more half-baked, violent, and unbearable before it locates an ending, which is greeted not with dramatic satisfaction, but with great relief. Go to Full Review

William B. @Wilberry Nov 14 Over the top to stupid overall. Interesting moments, but not worth it. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Nov 13 Killing Mary Sue is one of those chaotic indie comedies that makes you question what the filmmakers were even aiming for, because from the very first scene the movie has no sense of direction, tone, or narrative control. What starts as a quirky premise quickly spirals into a disjointed mess where nothing feels connected, purposeful, or even intentionally absurd. Instead of leaning into sharp satire or dark humor, the film settles into a bizarre pattern of randomness that plays less like a clever stylistic choice and more like the result of a script assembled from discarded ideas. The early scenes set the tone for this confusion, especially the moment where Mary Sue frantically hides drugs from her stepfather while her mother gives her a rushed warning. There’s no comedic rhythm, no tension, and no emotional clarity—just a jumble of actions stitched together without payoff. The situation should have either built character depth or comedic escalation, but instead it feels like a half-baked concept thrown onto the screen without a plan. That lack of intention echoes throughout the entire film. Things get even more bewildering when the story introduces two random men spying on and photographing Mary Sue. These characters look like they were pulled from a line at the grocery store and told to stand still, providing no presence, no comedic timing, and no narrative justification. The dialogue they’re given—especially the crude exchange where Mary Sue tells them they can sleep with her if they knock her off her feet with a punch—lands with a thud. It’s not shocking, edgy, or comedic; it’s just awkward. This sequence alone encapsulates the film’s inability to balance tone or understand how to deliver its own jokes. The screenplay is ultimately the downfall of Killing Mary Sue. Every scene feels like a first draft that was never refined, lacking structure, character development, and even the basic coherence needed to make a comedy function. Instead of building momentum or finding a comedic throughline, the story moves in random bursts, as if hoping sheer absurdity will be enough to hold the audience’s attention. Unfortunately, the result feels more like watching an extended prank than an actual film. Stylistically, the movie has the hallmarks of a low-budget indie production striving for cult appeal, but none of the confidence, wit, or intentional weirdness that successful oddball comedies possess. The performances are flat, the humor is uninspired, and the overall energy feels like everyone involved was trying to make a joke out of the very idea of filmmaking. Even moments that should land on shock value or outrageous humor fall embarrassingly short, leaving the film stuck somewhere between boring and baffling. By the end, there’s no emotional takeaway, no memorable characters, and no satisfying payoff—just the lingering sense that you’ve spent ninety minutes watching something that can’t decide what it wants to be. Killing Mary Sue isn’t a film I would ever revisit, nor is it one I would recommend under any circumstance. It’s forgettable, shallow, and sloppily executed, and chances are I’ll barely remember it a week from now. It’s the kind of movie that disappears from your mind as quickly as it arrived, leaving nothing behind except the relief that it’s finally over.
