Donald Clarke Irish Times There is enough here for us to confirm O'Connor as a talent for the future. Rough stuff. Rated: 3/5 Apr 19, 2013 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard It looks authentic and its traveller cast, many of whom have never acted, do at least as well as many people who have. Rated: 3/5 Mar 29, 2013 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian A flibbertigibbet: it arrives with a twinkle in its eye, but little else between its cauliflower ears. Rated: 2/5 Mar 28, 2013 Full Review Edward Frost CineVue King of the Travellers is a near-total mess of ideas drowned out by a lack of tonal consistency. Rated: 1/5 Feb 13, 2019 Full Review Simon Kinnear Total Film There's a strand of 'us vs them' that eventually grates, but O'Connor's marshalling of a cast that includes many real travellers shows real feeling for this misunderstood community. Jonty R Irish film has been on a sharp rise recently with so many new projects and shows being made every few months (admittedly mostly in Dublin and Northern Ireland, not a lot down here in Limerick). These can be from high budget sellers, to low indie flicks...and King Of The Travellers is one hell of an addition! For context to those living out of Ireland, the travelling community is a minority group here in Ireland, one of which everyone has some sort of story with. This is one of the first films about Irish travellers, starring Irish travellers and it's bloody impressive. John Conners makes for an amazing protagonist with Michael and Paddy Collins also doing well in roles as Francis and Paddy Moorehouse. But the best performance has to be Peter Coonan as the rough house Mickey The Bags Moorehouse. Outside of the bare knuckle fights, there is a Shakespearean like love story between John and Winnie with will have you hooked from the start. The film also goes into the discrimination against travellers a bit but not a-lot. Overall a very moving and entertaining film made with great direction and cinematography. Fair play to ya lads! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Audience Member Excellent and insightful portrayal of life as a traveller in Ireland. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member As a child, a young man by the name of John-Paul Moorehouse witnessed his father get shot by a gang of thugs, who were driving by in a car. John wakes up as he is just after having a nightmare of his father's killing. John is man who is a former boxer, he could have went to the Olympics, and turned pro, as the way he explains it in the movie. His uncle on the other side, Francis tries too hard to keep his name above in the family: He tries to control John by talking him out of doing certain things. He wants everything to be his way, not someone else's. He seems like that person who would plan something, and think his plan is going to work but it backfires. There is another antagonist in the movie, Mickie "the bags", he is the only very close friend that John has. He picks up a fight, and doesn't care sees. He's a loose cannon. But he has a heart, and wants the best for John. End of review. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Mediocre modern western. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Well it is not a good movie... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought this was poor. The script was rather poorly written and didn't really build up into anything. The acting was even worse. It is a pity as the title of the film was eye-catching and was really keen on watching a movie about the Gypsy community in Ireland. Avoid like the plague. The one positive is the musical score.
