While the holiday season represents the most magical time of year, ancient European folklore warns of Krampus, a horned beast who punishes naughty children at Christmastime. When dysfunctional family squabbling causes young Max (Emjay Anthony) to lose his festive spirit, it unleashes the wrath of the fearsome demon. As Krampus lays siege to the Engel home, mom (Toni Collette), pop (Adam Scott), sister (Stefania LaVie Owen) and brother must band together to save one another from a monstrous fate.

Critics Consensus

Krampus is gory good fun for fans of non-traditional holiday horror with a fondness for Joe Dante's B- movie classics, even if it doesn't have quite the savage bite its concept calls for.

Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine Some clever soul might have done something moderately effective with this idea, but Krampus is too dumb to be scary and too listless to be entertaining. Nov 5, 2019 Full Review A.A. Dowd AV Club Otherwise, this holiday-season fright flick never leaps far enough outside of its own box; the movie flirts with going full-on monster mash, with really cutting loose, but the mayhem is too little, too late. Rated: C+ Nov 5, 2019 Full Review Robert Abele TheWrap The legend of the Krampus, often referred to as the shadow of St. Nicholas, is a fertile one indeed, but this "Krampus" - a missed opportunity for anti-saccharine counter programming - isn't likely to create many new believers. Nov 5, 2019 Full Review Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages As it is, it’s like a stocking crammed with too many little bits and bobs that came to mind for the stocking-stuffer, ultimately pleasing no one like one or two well-considered big gifts would have. Nov 15, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Dougherty's movie is best when it's taking a cynical look at holiday celebrations, while the horror elements seem flat by comparison. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 23, 2022 Full Review Tom Jorgensen IGN Movies Outside of those nonsubstantive additions, The Naughty Cut is identical to the horror-comedy's theatrical version, and so remains an easy recommendation. Cedric G The creatures are spot on. Amazing movie if you interested in German folklore I think Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Elijah S This is a good modern take on Krampus. I really enjoyed it when it came out. Highly Recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Matthew D Horror over the holidays in the snowfall. Michael Dougherty’s fantasy horror-comedy Krampus (2015) is perfect for families looking for something different during Halloween or Christmas with that rare blending of genres. Dougherty accomplishes the creepy ungodly puppetry and cute designs of The Dark Crystal with the hilarious yuletide misery of Christmas Vacation and the chaotic terror of Gremlins. Krampus is inspired by folklore of the mythic menacing ancient beast Krampus, who is a punishing shadow to the rewarding Santa Claus. Krampus is a frozen delight with creative direction, cold atmosphere, constant laughs, real scares, breathtaking Krampus puppetry and Christmas cheer of course! Krampus feels atmospheric, cool, funny, and uncanny with Doughtery’s direction balancing the grim reality of spending Christmas with your wretched family with the haunting fantasy of an avenging demonic Santa, who smites the unfaithful to the spirit of Christmas. Writers Michael Dougherty, Todd Casey, and Zach Shields create a sincere familial bond and genuinely striking horror imagery. Krampus will make you believe in Santa Claus, hope, and Christmas cheer or else. Krampus is perfect really as I find myself enjoying it more with every viewing. Adam Scott is so heartfelt and protective as the kind father Tom Engel, who is trying to save his family from Krampus’ infernal onslaught over the holidays. Toni Collette is essential viewing as usual with a fiercely funny sarcasm over her hatred of her awful family, while remaining a loving mother named Sarah Engel. Emjay Anthony is so adorable and sincere in his love of Santa Claus and Christmas that you feel for his main character Max Engel. Few child actors emote such warmth and genuine empathy. Stefania LaVie Owen is so perfectly dismayed and disaffected as Max’s perpetually annoyed teenage sister Beth Engel. She’s so pretty and acts frightened better than most in Krampus. Allison Tolman is great as the blunt, yet sincere Aunt Linda. David Koechner’s redneck, conservative, gun-toting, Republican fool Uncle Howard is a blast of sheer idiocy and dire paranoia. Conchata Ferrell is a riot as the drunken, unpleasant Aunt Dorothy with her blunt, honest, unwelcome opinions and incessant complaints. Krista Stadler’s German grandmother Omi is gentle, mysterious, fun, and intriguing in every scene. I adore the stop motion sequence with her past encounter with the unholy entity Krampus. John Axelrad’s editing cuts gently for the heartfelt family drama, while sharply delivers scare after scare of the arriving Krampus legions for 98 minutes of tears and terror. Jules O'Loughlin’s cinematography works best in the obscured unknown of icy wind blowing snowy night terrors in his gorgeous wide shots. Every time you see Krampus on the roof is simply spectacular. The tender close-ups of the family rekindling their love and learning respect for one another are sweet. Jules Cook’s production design sees a cozy suburban house decimated and a snow covered truck eviscerated. Alistair Kay’s art direction is killer with elder god horror designs for Krampus, his fantasy based dark elves, and eerie gobbling clown. I adore all the snowfall around the suburbs with a frightening intensity. Marko Anttonen, Daniel Birt, and Kate Thurston’s set decoration adorns this household with all manner of cute Christmas decorations and ornaments. Bob Buck and Paul Booth’s costumes look realistic for a suburban family to wear with all the ugly, fuzzy Christmas sweaters you can imagine. Make-up artists Davina Lamont, Michele Perry, Leanne Hoare, and Elizabeth McCarthy bring creatures and characters to life with stunning warmth. The visual effects department hides the CGI well, while the physical puppets are so cool. Krampus himself is terrifying with a wicked design. Luke Hawker’s grotesque movements for Krampus are fearsome and magnificently acted. Gideon Emery’s voice for Krampus is a chilling hollow rasp for a truly unearthly choice. Douglas Pipes’ score is disturbingly melodic, while all the classic Christmas tunes are twisted into hallowed bellows beckoning Krampus further inside this family’s home. In conclusion, Krampus is a frostbitten nightmare with playful wit in every moment. At least you’ll love Krampus’ hellish Santa Claus aesthetic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Critic I I went into this film with low expectations and came out of it a little confused. But overall, I did enjoy it. For what it is, it's a perfectly fine Christmas horror movie. The jack in the box was also pure nightmare fuel and I loved that Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Audience Member The jack-in-the-box worm thing was hot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Alexander C I just want to make it clear. I LOVED THIS FILM! I just got done watching this film for the first time! I also watched the bonus features for it! I did a little research on the film too! The use of practical effects, puppetry, stunts, and animatronics in this film is absolutely phenomenal. Tom Savini would be highly impressed by this film's use of these things! If you're avid watcher of horror movies or are a horror movie fanatic like I am. You know what a statement like that means. I'm honestly a bit shocked he had nothing to do with this film. 85% of this film is nothing, but absolutely phenomenal practical effects, puppetry, stunts, and animatronics. The other 15% being very well done CGI and special effects! If you love dark and funny horror movies with a twist. This movie is for you! If you love a little bit of action sprinkled in between jump scares and character development. This movie is for you! If you love the use of weather in movies like I do! This movie is for you! This film is a roller coaster ride rich in Christmas traditions, folktales, myths, and more. The costumes and the sets bring everything to life and the acting is great! You'll have fun watching this film! I know I did! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
