Critics Consensus

The storyline arc may seem a tad familiar to fans of the original, but Kung Fu Panda 2 offers enough action, comedy, and visual sparkle to compensate.

Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Kung Fu Panda 2 gets a little darker and slushier than the first, but never loses sight of its objective: fun, fun, fun. The animation is outstanding, and the story has enough surprises to make it new. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 2, 2019 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Where, in short, is this film's personality, or even the characters' personalities, for that matter? Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post [A] satisfying, if less than sensational, sequel to the funny, charming and action-packed animated feature from 2008. Rated: 2/4 Nov 22, 2013 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine This time, we have a film that deals with some new themes: “your origins do not define your present or future”, “let go of the past”, or “obsession with revenge brings nothing new with it”. Valuable lessons for the kids, of course. Full review in Spanish. Rated: 4/5 Mar 16, 2024 Full Review Jana Monji Age of the Geek This sequel doesn't disappoint and explains how Po became the son of a noodle-making gander while Po learns how to find inner peace. While I loved the anthropomorphic animals in the first film, I initially thought the wolves were hyenas. Rated: 3/5 Mar 13, 2024 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal A cinematic recipe of the hardcore and the heartfelt that, in the hands of the iron chefs DreamWorks Animation has employed to make it, is easy for any age to eat up. best out of the three Still an awesome movie, one of my favorite Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Ben W Great fun. Surprisingly very emotional and heart touching. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Jay W "Kung Fu Panda" surprised everyone with how good it actually was. It's sequel now has the burden of expectations to live up to. Everyone now knows that this movie can be good, so it no longer has the element of surprise. So, does this film deliver the goods? You can rest well knowing, YES "Kung Fu Panda 2" is a superb sequel. An underdog sequel can be tricky thing to pull off. It isn't enough to repeat the same story, after the events of the first film, the character is no longer an underdog. Due to this fact, many film franchises make the mistake of undoing the hero's progress. This movie does not do that to Po. Po and the crew all remember the lessons they learned in the first film and actually ADVANCE their characters. This isn't like "Mighty Ducks" where the heroes just relearn the same lessons, they learned in the first film because, they weren't training in the offseason. This isn't a "Megaman" game where the hero got rid of all his powerups from the previous game. And that is so refreshing to see. The action in this film is some of the best animated action of all time. The comedy in this is very fast paced, a joke happening a mile a minute. But it still knows when to dial back and let a bug moment sink in. Some jokes are clever, and even their slapstick is really good. This movie had some jokes that I replay again and again just to have a good laugh. Their returning characters are good, their new additions voiced by Michelle Yeoh, Gary Oldman and Jean Claude Van Damme are all welcomed additions. If you liked the first film, this one is a no brainer, I highly recommend. If you are just a fan of good movies, this movie is for you. Rock on Panda! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Thu T Arguably better than the first one. This movie is funny, emotional and well animated. An absolute must-see! 🍿 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Robby B 2 Top Critics hate this film. WHY?!?!?!?!?! IT IS A WORTHY SEQUEL TO THE ORIGINAL!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Dionisis T One of the best possible sequels even years later! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
