Critics Consensus

The storyline arc may seem a tad familiar to fans of the original, but Kung Fu Panda 2 offers enough action, comedy, and visual sparkle to compensate.

Kung Fu Panda 2 gets a little darker and slushier than the first, but never loses sight of its objective: fun, fun, fun. The animation is outstanding, and the story has enough surprises to make it new. Go to Full Review

[A] satisfying, if less than sensational, sequel to the funny, charming and action-packed animated feature from 2008. Go to Full Review

This time, we have a film that deals with some new themes: “your origins do not define your present or future”, “let go of the past”, or “obsession with revenge brings nothing new with it”. Valuable lessons for the kids, of course. Full review in Spanish. Go to Full Review

This sequel doesn't disappoint and explains how Po became the son of a noodle-making gander while Po learns how to find inner peace. While I loved the anthropomorphic animals in the first film, I initially thought the wolves were hyenas. Go to Full Review

A cinematic recipe of the hardcore and the heartfelt that, in the hands of the iron chefs DreamWorks Animation has employed to make it, is easy for any age to eat up. Go to Full Review

best out of the three 02/24/2024 Still an awesome movie, one of my favorite See more Ben W 02/24/2024 Great fun. Surprisingly very emotional and heart touching. See more @WeatherNerd Dec 20 This sequel to an already amazing movie significantly builds on the story of the first movie, with darker themes being introduced and an explanation to Po’s backstory being started that carried on to the next movie. Dreamworks took what was wrong with Tai Lung, the antagonist of the first film, and worked it out when writing Shen, who is developed better and is given less of a reason to vengeful, making him a better overall villain than Tai Lung. 8/10 movie overall. See more Andrew T @ATMOVIEGUY Dec 16 Kung Fu Panda 2 is an example of where the sequel improves on the original film. Not only does it have a really powerful story all about genocide and overcoming PTSD, but it also has some intense action scenes, plenty of laughs, and incredible animation, especially with the character movement and design of the warmongering peacock Lord Shen. I'd even say it is the (coincidentally) second best film in the DreamWorks franchise, and it is definitely one that you do not want to miss. See more Mitchell S @Mitchstur Dec 16 I actually think it exceeds the first one in some ways. We get Po's backstory this time, and a valuable message about moving forward. Plus the same dazzling animation, action sequences and sweet character designs from the first one. See more Mike D @ScreamingParrot Dec 16 This felt like it's main aim was to continue a profitable movie. Plot wasn't interesting and humor wasn't nearly as good as the first movie. It's watchable but completely forgettable. See more Read all reviews
