Audience Member I recently streamed the dubbed version of this low-budget Italian horror quickie. Well, I fast-forwarded through some parts. I saw enough. Five dancing showgirls, their piano player, and their manager Lucas (Rizzo) seek shelter in an old castle even though they are repeatedly warned against it. What else?! The girls lounge around in frilly nighties and when they practice their routines one girl does a strip tease. Of course this is nothing surprising for a European horror flick of the early 60s to mix in a healthy dose of sex appeal. Vera (Rocco) is the main protagonist, who seems to go into a trance that often draws her into greater danger and into the arms of the mysterious owner of the castle Count Gabor Kernassy (Brandi). One showgirl gets knocked off early. Vera is the most curious to figure out whodoneit. Is it the dour housekeeper or groundskeeper? It couldn't be the Count who protectively warns the guests not to go wondering outside their rooms at night, then again he has a hokey lab for testing blood in the basement. And what of the vampire that is mentioned right in the title? Quite dull and not very original, but also not the worst attempt at a paranormal story on a cheap budget I've seen. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member The Playgirls and the Vampire..what a great working title. Too bad the actual film is a bit of a wet dog. It is worth a few chuckles & @ a brink running time it doesn't make you hate yourself too much but I found it really missed the mark for what it could have actually been. For the era it sorta exploits these girls as they hang out in their pajamas a lot but it just isn't sexy enough. In one scene we are even blessed w/ their dancing routine but these girls have no talent what so ever. Erotic it is not. Painfully laughable more like it. When it does actually get to the vampire of this film (it seems like it takes forever for the fangs to come out) it does pay off a bit more plot wise but it's more mild amusement then actual scares. Not one for remakes but someone should give this one a go Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a silly, fun, although slightly disappointing vampire movie. The story is a lot like other vampire movies, just with a bunch of pretty girls. It's pretty good, but it could be better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Stylishly shot in black and white, this debut film from Piero Regnoli predates the more well known erotic vampire films of Jean Rollin. A group of strippers seek refuge in an old castle, and one of them falls victim to a vampire that just happens to live there (storm+ strippers + castle= vampire- very logical). Quite effective in places and best viewed as a pioneering work for what was to come. Tame in terms of sexuality and gore by todays standards- this would probaby rate an M in NZ. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A must see for lovers of chessy (sexy?) 60's "horror". I may have to add this to my "So Bad It's Good" list.
