Penelope Gilliatt The New Yorker 01/29/2024
La Collectionneuse hasn’t a very sure sense of the ridiculous, or much love, and Rohmer’s command of a wry style all his own hasn’t yet gathered itself to a point. Go to Full Review
Jan Dawson Sight & Sound 04/01/2020
Curiously, although La Collectionneuse (Connoisseur) more than confirms [Eric Rohmer's] creative strength, it is, far more markedly than his earlier feature, a critic's film. Go to Full Review
Richard Brody The New Yorker 09/12/2016
The natural splendors of blue water, rocky shore, bright sky, and hilly terrain provide a serene setting for the eternal struggles of man versus man, man versus woman, and man versus his own worst instincts. Go to Full Review

When will intellectuals learn that intellectualizing emotions does not engage them? Apparently. Eric Rohmer never will... he has produced one of the most tedious films that I have seen in a long time. Go to Full Review

s r @ScottR 08/15/2021 A French film that teases us all the way to the end. I appreciated it for its poetic approach to life and attempt to portray modern relationships. Made me want to go to the Riviera. Saw on TCM. See more 10/16/2020 Rohmer had a deliberate narrative style that postponed or sidestepped events that a conventional director would have supplied right on schedule. Yes, there is some tedium and some bothersome issues in the rather languorous pace of the action, the voice over, and in the opinion of himself Adrian has. But the overall effect resonates in the tension that clearly is there between characters. And Haydée Politoff is just great as the object of both annoyance and desire. 3.7 stars See more 07/09/2018 The third film in Eric Rohmer's "Moral Tales" series is not as enthralling as his later films in the series. See more 11/07/2016 It's classic Eric Rohmer, with a kind of sexual tension that is not gratuitous but reveals deeper movements in the souls of the characters. See more 10/03/2016 Superbly shot and perfectly told/narrated through dialogues, inner monologue and its scenes See more 12/27/2015 An exploration of the complicated, convoluted narratives that we throw over straightforward events. Nobody seems entirely sure exactly what it is that they're doing. They chase ideas, but their ideas are ultimately unsatisfactory, or unattainable. No character comes out of it especially well, but Haydée, perhaps, is the one who has the right amount of humorous detachment from it all. Many beautiful lines in a film that ultimately shows how beautiful phrases and ideas don't get you so very far. See more Read all reviews
