While there are moments of effective suspense, this isn't shooting for a typical horror tone. The terrors of this film are the realities of genocide -- for indigenous women in particular. Go to Full Review

"La Llorona" avoids the tropes of horror... Instead, this smart and elegant film feels like a languid bit of cinematic magical realism where strange things happen - and the real horror lies not in the supernatural but in the savage acts of men. Go to Full Review

Jayro Bustamente’s La Llorona draws on [the] folk tale but infuses it with political meaning (which is made explicit in the song played over the final credits). Go to Full Review

A near perfect embodiment of the richness of the La Llorona legend, this tale presents the mythical woman not as a punishing figure, but as a symbol of the Guatemalan genocide. The result is beauty, haunting, and incredibly memorable Go to Full Review

La Llorona is a subtle and persuasive masterpiece – a clever piece of horror that asks the audience to witness real life atrocities and recoil from them far more than they recoil from the supernatural. Go to Full Review

Nov 23 *SPOILER* I didn't think it was a horror but more of a gritty realist approach towards Guatemala's genocide but I enjoyed the old woman's dreams haunting her and the old man's paranoia. The movie was too slow to start but the ending was brilliant which is when I think it became my idea of a horror film. I wish the last 10 minutes was done in more detail and spread over the last half an hour or so. The family being haunted by their demons, the old white woman experiencing Alma losing her children and life, killing her husband not even because she felt remorse at the genocide but because she was having a lucid experience where she was in Alma's body but seemingly getting away with it because she's a rich white woman (who appears to present as a victim of her husband's lustful nature whilst perpetuating his predatory behaviour) highlights the world we live in because if it were Alma killing him, I wonder how the old woman would have approached her. Taking away the voice of those that are innocent never works as they were haunted by the dead and living alike. See more Stephen G. @patient1 Oct 19 Quite the Haunting introduction to the film. This telling of the story is horrific and quite heartbreaking, as any who watch will have to hear to believe. 1st Guatemalan telling for me and its story is beyond distressing, I can only imagine the Horror to come into play soon. The pain of guilt or pure hysteria, either are giving off such a horrifically haunting vibe. Either Madness has set in or the mystical is starting to appear, things are finally starting to come to light possibly. Fantastic story of Pain and Suffering See more revolver.0 8 @Revolver08 Oct 15 Good looking and setup, but very naive and superstition. Unfortunately, in reality, due to the lack of conscience such cannibalistic officials do not suffer any moral torment.
