Audience Member Two stars for Miss Lamarr lighting up the screen in the first two acts, then it devolves into an unconvincing chase with poor special effects. This looks like a cheaply made B&W follow-up to Hedy's triumph in Sampson and Delilah. The Havana location scenes are OK but the film suffers from a weak script with a weak ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Steve D At times frustrating but overall solid. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Joseph H. Lewis directed this solid little noir about Hedy Lamarr trying to leave Cuba. Lamarr finds herself being used as bait by federal agents trying to break a smuggling ring, but the man using her, of course, begins to fall for the beautiful Lamarr. It's a somewhat stodgy melodrama, but Lamarr is always a treat to watch and Lewis brings enough style to hold your interest. George Macready has a supporting role and this film was also the film debut of Steven Hill (that Law & Order) who I had no idea had been acting that long. David Raksin provided a a fine score for the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Found it interesting because you get a tour of old Havana before Castro. I;ve always liked John Hodiak but he's kind of wooden here. Lamarr apparently didn;t get her two-hour makeup sessions here so you won't realize she was considered a world-class beauty. She's also pretty wooden here. Maybe it was just another day at the office for both of them. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Released the same year as his masterpiece GUN CRAZY (1950), Joseph H. Lewis almost matches those dizzy heights with A LADY WITHOUT A PASSPORT. In fact the latter is almost the formalist double of the former. Both films end in fog shrouded settings which create unnerving images and both contain over the top long-takes filmed from the back of cars. The long-take in A LADY is only one minute but it's as impressive. The camera manages to move backwards, reframe, then a few seconds later it moves forward and does a 90 degree turn. I have no idea how they did this.' Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Hedy is gorgeous as ever but this loses steam after a promising beginning.
