In a mysterious and haunting dream world, a 12-year-old girl meets the 13th century young poet Rumi, as they travel through a fantastical land where luxurious airships float through the air, and unfurling, insidious black tendrils spread over a mystical city. Directed by Alex Kronemer, Lamya's Poem is a heartfelt animated tale that follows a Syrian girl as she flees her war-torn country on a perilous journey that eventually brings her to the unwelcoming shores of a European refugee camp. The lives of Lamya, escaping the Syrian Civil War in 2016, and young Rumi, running away from Mongol hordes in 1221, curiously parallel each other; in the timeless space where the two meet, each ends up saving the other from despair and hopelessness. This moving film conveys the sudden violence of war, the disorientation of displacement, and the risks many take to just survive--all through the lens of an imaginative, bright young girl.

Anna Smith Deadline Hollywood Daily Lamya's Poem could have used a few more of the light touches, but it's still a vivid and affecting depiction of a child fighting real-world problems with powerful poetry. Jun 21, 2021 Full Review Wendy Ide Screen International Lamya's Poem is earnest and at times a little overwrought, but there's a real heart to its storytelling and its exploration of the timeless power of words. Jun 16, 2021 Full Review Caroline Cao Vague Visages Lamya’s Poem is best suited for streaming distribution since the documentarian Kronemer only shows a trying ability to accomplish theatrical flair. Still, parents viewing the film with children can surrender to its spell and ambition and forgive its lags. Dec 13, 2023 Full Review Jennifer Borget Common Sense Media The story is creative in how it brings the two Syrian children together, especially in the climax featuring real poems by Jalaluddin Rumi and how his words inspire people hundreds of years later. Rated: 3/5 Mar 1, 2023 Full Review Josh Bell Crooked Marquee With its blandly educational tone and unremarkable animation, Lamya's Poem is never as rousing or inspirational as it's meant to be. Rated: C+ Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Valerie Kalfrin AWFJ.org A thoughtful and compassionate film, Lamya’s Poem recognizes that “sometimes the world keeps breaking your heart until it opens”—but keeping your heart open is the only way to defeat hate. anwar a This movie is quite amazing. To those who love and know Rumi, it is a treat, to those who don't know Rumi it is a treat. The message in the end is worth the buildup, quite a lot gets accomplished in just 1.5 hours. I cannot recommend it enough! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/04/23 Full Review Justin R It's kinda touching. A little slow but okay nonetheless Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/23 Full Review PanicMose M Snore. The animation was the reason for the only star. The movie was like a dogs dream, if it could be explained as such. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/23/23 Full Review Mike P Horrible movie. Unwatchable at any speed. This animated film takes us on a journey through the lives of two refugees separated by time: Lamya, a contemporary Syrian girl, and the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. As they flee from violence and oppression, the film offers a powerful message of hope and cultural memory. The visual style of LAMYA'S POEM is breathtaking. The animation has a graphic novel quality in contemporary sequences and an otherworldly quality in depicting Rumi's life. The music, composed by Christopher Willis, blends the two timelines seamlessly, creating a smooth and immersive experience. At the core of LAMYA'S POEM are a message of hope, the impact of history, and the power of one's culture. Lamya's journey deals with themes of anger, revenge, and loss, but the film suggests a poetic way of dealing with these emotions. Lamya, a young girl living in Syria with her mother, begins this chapter of her story when she receives a book of poetry from her teacher. As she reads the poems, she dreams of meeting the poet and discovering the power of his words. Through her journey, she learns about the importance of storytelling and the power of the written word. The animation style of LAMYA'S POEM is simple but highly effective, with characters that are primarily outlined but have an impressive subtlety of expression. The film's themes of connections, from the one across time to the love between mother and daughter, are explored with tenderness and insight. Colors in the film, such as green and red, and symbolic visual metaphors support the storytelling and evoke a sense of rich culture through classical painting techniques, bold silhouettes, and immense vistas. While I appreciate the film's accessibility to Western audiences through its use of English dialogue, I would have preferred to see it in its original language, Arabic, with subtitles. The English version, while more approachable for most, was a little jarring for me, even with the talented voice cast. LAMYA'S POEM is a beautiful blend of animation, storytelling, and a powerful message, combined with its stunning visuals, making it a must-see for all audiences. Whether you're a fan of poetry or just looking for an uplifting and thought-provoking film, LAMYA'S POEM is guaranteed to captivate and inspire.
