Carol Midgley Times (UK) In the end this was less a film about the Lancaster bomber as a piece of military hardware, and more about what it meant to those young men, some only teenagers, who risked their lives in it. Rated: 4/5 Jul 29, 2022 Full Review Edward Porter Times (UK) This sturdy account, with lots of striking details, sees no need to be preachy and judgmental about the damage done by British bombing raids. It lets the veterans give their thoughts on the matter, and these — unsurprisingly — are humane and reasonable. Rated: 4/5 Jun 2, 2022 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) It’s solid, no frills film-making, but that’s entirely appropriate given the sobering stories recounted by surviving members of Bomber Command, now in their 90s. Rated: 3/5 May 29, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse A picture may be worth a thousand words, but the words of the people that were there, in the sky and on the ground, paint a vivid portrait of the destruction brought from above. Rated: 4/5 Nov 10, 2022 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Their warts-and-all, often emotional testimony (at times, as questioning of their own actions and critical of their command, as they are of the opposition they were there to stop) is what really makes for enlightening and compelling viewing. Rated: 4/5 Aug 31, 2022 Full Review Matthew Bond The Mail on Sunday (UK) As well as telling a fascinating story, they get the all-important tone just right, certainly marking the bravery and skill of the aircrew but also quietly acknowledging that the raids of Bomber Command remain a sensitive issue almost eight decades on. John J It is a very good representation of what it was really like according to my uncle who was a Lancaster pilot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Jake C Finally an honest account of what these brave men went through from the men themselves. No other branch of the armed forces suffered bigger losses than the men of bomber command, a 50% survival rate. And no other branch was treated as badly after the war. Inspirational and humbling in equal measure. A beautifully crafted film that needs to be watched. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/23 Full Review P G Good. I think there was a missed opportunity, to interview the bomb squads from Germany. These guys are all in their 90s now, so unlikely to capture their side of the story to give a complete picture. I still think the spitfire doc was better overall. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/16/23 Full Review Ruby E Beautiful and sad. Wish more of them could have been atound to share their stories Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/26/23 Full Review Ron H Where to start? I was expecting an in-depth documentary of the aircraft, its origins, its manufacture, its systems and mechanics and the training and responsibilities of its crew. What I got was a little of the above and much more about the bombing campaign, its successes and failures and the ethics of the whole endeavour. The "Butcher Harris" controversy and the shunning of Bomber Command after the war (which I suspect was more important to later-day historians than people in the U.K. who lived through those times) was the final unnecessary straw. Save your 10 bucks. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/31/22 Full Review Peter G This is an extraordinary mixture of real newsreel of WW2 bombing raids, with extracts from the 1950s film "The Dambusters", with thoughtful interviews with former crew who must have been in their late 90s, with the Battle of Britain Lancaster starting up and taking off. In the credits is a tribute to NX611 "Just Jane", being restored to flying condition as a tribute to Bomber Commnad at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre - currently to taxying condition only. I saw it take off from Sydney in 1965 - once heard, never forgotten. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/22 Full Review Read all reviews
