      Critics Consensus

The Last Castle is well acted and rousing for the most part, but the story can't stand up to close scrutiny.

Suzette T Stop right now this movie is ridiculous. The allegedly "cruel" military prison warden is so terrible that no one has been killed on his watch. Sure he's a dick and hands out shitty punishments but is that really an excuse to literally burn the entire place to the ground and risk everyone's lives including the guards who just work there? What an exercise in military masturbation with plot holes so big you can drive a tank through them. This power fantasy was ridiculous and I'm sure Redford and Gandolgini were embarrassed to be in it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/01/24 Full Review Joe b very corny and unrealistic Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/21/23 Full Review Farah R There's no denying that The Last Castle is riddled with cliches, but solid performances, especially from Robert Redford, and a couple of great scenes make it heartfelt and enjoyable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Roger L A modern day retelling of David vs Goliath that took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review Paul B I enjoyed the movie even if it had so many plots holes. I just like Redford and Morgan Freeman's movie debut. Definitely not a classic though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/23 Full Review Gareth v What a load of predictable, uninspiring dross this is. Gandolfini tries his best with this dull script, but Redford has phoned his performance in. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Alonso Duralde The Advocate The Last Castle is pretty much every prison movie cliché and every mutiny movie cliché you’ve ever seen -- along with some Spartacus/Ben-Hur–style shirtless movie star masochism -- served up in one bombastic package. Apr 5, 2022 Full Review Empire Magazine Rated: 3/5 Dec 30, 2006 Full Review Nev Pierce BBC.com Not a serious prison flick, but director Lurie finds fresh ways to frame familiar situations, and pulls it off with enough tongue-in-cheek wit.
