Critics Consensus

The Last Castle is well acted and rousing for the most part, but the story can't stand up to close scrutiny.

The Last Castle is pretty much every prison movie cliché and every mutiny movie cliché you’ve ever seen -- along with some Spartacus/Ben-Hur–style shirtless movie star masochism -- served up in one bombastic package. Go to Full Review

Not a serious prison flick, but director Lurie finds fresh ways to frame familiar situations, and pulls it off with enough tongue-in-cheek wit. Go to Full Review

Miss T X @TiaDalmaTia 5d The film is more morally tangled than its patriotic framing initially suggests. A cautionary tale about pride and the myth of selfless righteousness. We're supposed to rally behind Redford’s Gen. Irwin, a fallen hero who inspires fellow inmates to reclaim their dignity, while Gandolfini’s Col. Winters is framed as the tyrant warden. From today's POV Winters’ actions seem more bureaucratic than brutal. He's not a monster, just middle management in uniform. It's a character study of a soldier who can’t return to civilian life. Irwin doesn't offer men liberation, rather he drafts them into his private purgatory. Irwin's cult of personality cloaks pride as patriotism, sacrificing men for his legacy. Winters has got a procedural mindset, he's but an instrument of the institution. Irwin unveils his weakness by turning their conflict personal. Riot sequences have enormous plotholes. The film entertains, but no longer inspires, ultimately asking, which leader strayed farther from their duty? See more David D Nov 7 The critics reviews very often display a deep dislike of the military and what is a male centric movie. Given when it was released, it was a sign of what was coming in society. As we move out of that zeitgeist, lets see what the next one brings. The film itself is good, not brilliant. The acting is solid and the script and pacing work. It's a good watch, but not one shot for cinema. This is home viewing. See more Lee H. @LeeHop7 Sep 20 Is the plot formulaic? Yes. Is it still worth watching? Hell yes. Gandolfini and Redford’s performances are top notch and even though you can see the ending coming from a mile away it still manages to draw you in.
