matthew c Incredible film, I've not seen many Ford films that werent Westerns, and this is a layered treat for the sense. Spencer Tracy absolutely dominates in this also, surprised neither this nor The Old Man & The Sea won him the Academy Award that year, guess I better watch Separate Tables sometime and see how Niven's performance won it... Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent film about politics! Spencer Tracy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/21/21 Full Review Audience Member While Spencer Tracy is wonderful in playing the aging, out of touch city political boss, and Ford is great in creating the ambiance of slow deterioration, a changing world and those who are being left behind, it does not make for a pleasant movie watching experience. The caricature nature of the racist and anti-immigrant sentiment, versus the perceived corruption of the political system between the haves and have-nots, without any attempt at a cathartic moment leaves a very unfulfilled and empty feeling at the end of the movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best movies ever. So classic, serious and funny all at the same time. Explains the changing face of politics in America over the generations. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite a bit of Ford's later work has nostalgia as its theme; think Cheyenne Autumn and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. As with all of us who are aging, Ford too was aware of his own world dissipating before his eyes and he projected this into his films. The Last Hurrah is one more example and its a good one, fairly accurate in its portrayal of Old Time American politics, symbolized by Tracy's role, as it loses out to a more modern, sophisticated political sense of life. It IS sentimental but what movie built on nostalgia could be otherwise? Take it for what it is and enjoy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Ed M Spencer Tracy! John Ford! Lindsay Anderson Sight & Sound Ford has done all this once... But the poetry is gone.
