Jake Cole Slant Magazine John Woo’s promising, sporadically brilliant early feature offers a pristine window on a future master learning his craft. Mar 9, 2023 Full Review Howard Waldstein CBR A nascent Woo still bears all of his future hallmarks, but in 1979, he was still working out the kinks. Jul 18, 2023 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk stands out as an important transition work, where a future master was working out the interplay of his stylistic and thematic obsessions. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 19, 2023 Full Review Peter Martin ScreenAnarchy Entirely engaging, if a bit messy, while pointing forward to what John Woo would accomplish in the coming decade as he developed his skills as a director. Mar 9, 2023 Full Review Brian Susbielles InSession Film The journey turns into one about deception and the truth about who is really honorable. Mar 1, 2023 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse "Last Hurrah for Chivalry" is a great sample of traditional HK martial arts film, but John Woo's additions in narrative, implementation, and overall style make it a rather unique entry in the category Dec 25, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

bo j Pure dialogue, eyes glued to the screen, hanging on every word. A masterpiece from a small budget. Phone Booth is the first movie to come to mind regarding how it all took place in one room. Watch it if you consider yourself a curious intellectual person of science. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/22 Full Review Audience Member Although it hasn't aged very well it's still really impressive for the timenit was made and it's budget. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/22/21 Full Review Audience Member Worth seeking out if you're a John Woo connoisseur. It's a very gracefully shot martial arts flick with a lot of cheap sound effects, docile humor and mostly silly story but at least it's often entertaining in the midst of it's B-Movie shortcomings. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This was surprisingly awesome. After the good but mostly clunky Hand of Death I really wasn't expecting Woo to knock it so far out of the park with this. It's so much fun, the pace is relentless, and the fights are fucking insane. There's three or four in here that are among the best I've ever seen. And it gets dark as hell, and the music is great. Loved it. Though it does get a bit exhausting by the end, and the female characters are atrocious. Other than that, awesome. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A Basic Film Plot Of Vengeance Turned Into Something Great. 19 Years Before Face/Off, John Woo Made This 1978 Martial Arts Classic. This Film Boasts All His Trademark Elements, Violence, Fast-Paced, Comic Release Of Tense Scenes & Some Great Acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member When you tire of academics pinning everything that doesn't neatly fit into some neutered utopian post-gender egalitarian view of the world with some new -ism, there's old John Woo. Even this early wuxia of his is full of broad, simple themes of brotherhood, honor, betrayal, etc. that are morally unambiguous & sentimental and therefore unpopular with the "intellectuals", but ultimately that can be the most honest storytelling language.
