A nascent Woo still bears all of his future hallmarks, but in 1979, he was still working out the kinks. Go to Full Review

stands out as an important transition work, where a future master was working out the interplay of his stylistic and thematic obsessions. Go to Full Review

Entirely engaging, if a bit messy, while pointing forward to what John Woo would accomplish in the coming decade as he developed his skills as a director. Go to Full Review

08/22/2021 Although it hasn't aged very well it's still really impressive for the timenit was made and it's budget. See more @ExcessMale 07/01/2021 Worth seeking out if you're a John Woo connoisseur. It's a very gracefully shot martial arts flick with a lot of cheap sound effects, docile humor and mostly silly story but at least it's often entertaining in the midst of it's B-Movie shortcomings. See more 09/10/2015 This was surprisingly awesome. After the good but mostly clunky Hand of Death I really wasn't expecting Woo to knock it so far out of the park with this. It's so much fun, the pace is relentless, and the fights are fucking insane. There's three or four in here that are among the best I've ever seen. And it gets dark as hell, and the music is great. Loved it. Though it does get a bit exhausting by the end, and the female characters are atrocious. Other than that, awesome. See more 09/04/2013 A Basic Film Plot Of Vengeance Turned Into Something Great. 19 Years Before Face/Off, John Woo Made This 1978 Martial Arts Classic. This Film Boasts All His Trademark Elements, Violence, Fast-Paced, Comic Release Of Tense Scenes & Some Great Acting. See more 08/15/2012 When you tire of academics pinning everything that doesn't neatly fit into some neutered utopian post-gender egalitarian view of the world with some new -ism, there's old John Woo. Even this early wuxia of his is full of broad, simple themes of brotherhood, honor, betrayal, etc. that are morally unambiguous & sentimental and therefore unpopular with the "intellectuals", but ultimately that can be the most honest storytelling language. See more 01/07/2012 John Woo shows his penchant for meticulous action choreography in his early swordplay film, Last Hurrah For Chivalry. See more Read all reviews
