Louise (Karen Gillan), a 28-year-old Brooklynite adrift in life, finds herself suddenly single and grappling with her identity as a musician. While she struggles with her underlying depression, a reckless drunken stumble lands her with a broken hip, and leads to a stint in a physical therapy ward with patients twice her age. Here, she crosses paths with Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein), a cantankerous elderly Polish woman who speaks no English. Reluctantly, Louise takes on the role of Antonina's caregiver, a situation neither of them welcomes. As they navigate their begrudging relationship, they confront the realities of aging, forcing Louise to consider her own journey into adulthood.

Jourdain Searles The Hollywood Reporter All the pieces are there, but Late Bloomers ultimately fails to sell the film’s core relationship. Mar 18, 2023 Full Review Wayne Alan Brenner Austin Chronicle Director Lisa Steen brings these rich characters and their struggles to life onscreen with a confident style and – yes, considering her wise, delicate handling of what could’ve been so often easily botched – grace. Mar 14, 2023 Full Review Samantha Bergeson IndieWire Gillan does her best impression of Aya Cash but the jokes fall flat, especially compared to her past work in the MCU and Jumanji franchise. Rated: D Mar 13, 2023 Full Review Monique Jones Common Sense Media This sweet film about intergenerational friendship shows that, no matter how old you get, you can still mature and learn important life lessons. Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots Doesn’t quite live up to its potential, but this sweet, light, low-key movie about personal growth and adult relationships is good enough. Feb 4, 2025 Full Review Gissane Sophia Lady Geeks Media It’s an honest, heartfelt exploration of existential dread, filled with beautiful performances from Karen Gillan and Małgorzata Zajączkowska (Margaret Sophie Stein). Audience Member Everyone’s a late bloomer but you’re never too old to come of age Louise is a 28 year old woman comfortable where she is but almost every one of her friends has gone up and left She’s also struggling with her aspirations as a musician especially with her mother suffering an illness that’s diminishing her One night she sneaks around her ex boyfriends house and ends up breaking her hip She has to remain on crutches for the time being Then she encounters an elderly Polish woman who’s quite the sporadic individual; she’s rude, snappy, and full of sass Louise then decides to take her in as a tenant in her apartment and slowly they form a friendship The friendship is pretty adorable between these two and you understand with this old woman why she’s mad at the world Everything changed after she came to this country so naturally she would change on her own The first half is happy go lucky yet after the second half it shifts entirely to a drama portion into the last half It’s a bit unbalanced especially with the constant flashbacks But Karen Gillian shines as Louise learning to grow up herself in several ways as well as the agonies of aging It’s okay to make new memories, be more curious, anyone tells you anything negative get them out, travel more, kids may drive us nuts but they keep us curious about the world, we can still mature and learn Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Rich H Karen Gillan is a wonderful actress, and the entire cast was perfect. This was a very enjoyable movie. It is also available on Kanopy, which is what I used to see it on 1/30/2025. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Alex C I'm so confused. I remember watching this movie, but I don't at the same time. What happened? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Sal D This movie is all about Louise played by Karen Gillan) and. In reality, Karen Gillan carries the film all on her shoulders with a bum hip. The script’s sentimentality is a few smidgeons above clichè and feeling emotionally manipulative…but Ms.Gillan’s performance overcomes the film’s shortcomings. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Kyle M Humbling genericity of ill-mixture albeit good intentions to minimal joy with Karen Gillian’s light-hearted comedic attempt being admirable in voicing bodily frustrations’ shrinking generational gap that doesn’t strike as conversationally engaging. (B-) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Vincent C I enjoyed this movie so much, it was funny and poignant and human and awkward in all the rights ways. Job well done :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
