When a playful millionaire dies, he leaves a surprise for his loved ones -- in order to claim his fortune, they must complete assignments that will help them become better people. For their respective shares of the money, snobbish Agnes (Fay Compton) must work as a housekeeper for a month, pulp novelist Deniston (Alastair Sim) has to spend time in jail, swinging bachelor Simon (Guy Middleton) must marry and the meek Herbert (George Cole) is forced to try his hand at bank robbery.

Unfortunately, for a movie that should be chock full of such shenanigans, Laughter in Paradise pointedly avoids farce, instead taking its characters' journeys a little too seriously and producing a disappointingly tame result.

I chuckled through this which is all you can ask for from a comedy. Alistair Sim is a great actor but the whole cast does a good job to keep this ticking along nicely. Worth a watch.

Despite an excellent cast there's no real outstanding performances here, although it's a solid enough mid 20th century British comedy with Audrey Hepburn in one of her first screen roles, although she's only on screen for about a minute.

Synopsis
