isla s This was a very thought provoking piece of social commentary. It features a variety of characters with different backgrounds and I found myself respecting Nigel, the teacher who tries to keep the refugees hopes and spirits up, despite the attitudes of other local people around them. He seems a very compassionate person and I think Toby Jones portrayed him very well. However, I found myself questioning the likelihood of some events to take place in terms of school organised trips and things, which seemed a bit of an obvious risk to me but otherwise it was a very good film - I liked that the various foreign characters are made to seem very human. This would be a good film to see if you wanted to discuss the plight of refugees from elsewhere coming in to the UK. Its heart breaking the way so much seems to come down to a seeming lottery in terms of whether people will be allowed to stay in Britain indefinitely. I would recommend this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member An insightful and disparaging drama around the immigration system and lives of those involved with it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this film - engaging and insightful. A real pleasure. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A very TV feel movie but with some great performances from unknown actors. Its about the cases of immigrant teens and how they fight to stay in the Uk rather than return to their dire lives at home. Important and interesting and nice to see Toby Jones in yet another amazing role. Some tales are heartbreaking Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A very touching and thought-provoking movie that is stuck in my mind for days after I saw it. A need to see. Mark Kermode Observer (UK) If the more melodramatic strains of the script (co-written with Charlotte Colbert) are occasionally at odds with the cast's naturalistic input, the overall picture remains convincing and engaging. Rated: 3/5 Jun 22, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The subject matter is downbeat but Goodison, helped by a likeable young cast, brings moments of humour and lyricism to the storytelling. Rated: 3/5 Jun 20, 2014 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian Goodison displays a sure, Shane Meadows-like touch with his lively unknown leads, and finds eloquent, cinematic ways of describing their hopes, dreams and fears. Oct 10, 2020 Full Review Ben Nicholson CineVue Whilst it may falter at times, Leave to Remain does prove a compelling watch and gives voice to a group who rarely have one. Rated: 3/5 Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Rich Cline Contactmusic.com With improv-style performances, using stories based on real-life experiences, this film has a strong blast of authenticity to shine light on a big issue.
