On New Year's Day 1900, Danny (Bill Nunn), a crew member on an ocean liner, finds a deserted infant and decides to adopt him, nicknaming him "1900." As an adult, the eccentric 1900 (Tim Roth) grows into a remarkable musician aboard the boat. Rumors of his brilliant piano playing eventually reach the shore, and his pal Max (Pruitt Taylor Vince) believes that success surely awaits 1900 on land. The only problem, however, is that the enigmatic pianist is loath to embrace life away from the ship.

Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader ...the nearly incessant camera movement suggests only the literal: the ship's progress across the ocean. Mar 6, 2019 Full Review Bruce Fretts Entertainment Weekly A trio of fine performances keeps it from curdling into magical schmaltz. Roth projects a disarmingly elegant presence, and he's equaled by Clarence Williams III, who challenges 1900 to a piano showdown in the film's exuberant centerpiece. Rated: B- Mar 6, 2019 Full Review Rita Kempley Washington Post The Legend of 1900 would have benefited from more story and less music, and tends to wear thin before it quite reaches the dock, but it is a ravishing film. Ian C I am soooooo late getting to see this. Completely slipped under my radar. Quite simply, from the director of Cinema Paradisio, we have another incredible, emotional homage to film, love and music. It’s not perfect, but if you let yourself go, drift away with the movie and accept that this is designed to bring a tear to your ete, you’ll be rewarded. Cinematography, the story, Roth and the music all provide a wonderful escape from the world… just like Roth protected on his floating home. It’s a must watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review Penelope Y Beautifully written, elegantly shot, acted, and scored, this movie is a true masterpiece. Tim Roth delivers a stunning performance as 1900, while Melanie Thierry leaves a lasting, entrancing impression. The story is whimsical, unique, and dream-like- I found myself wishing the characters’ journey could continue indefinitely. For me, the highlight was the epic piano duel- an unforgettable sequence, executed flawlessly by all involved as well as the scene where 1900 plays his piano in the midst of a raging storm. This is a truly beautiful and timeless film, one I could watch again and again. I only wish more films were made like this these days.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Germán M A morally absurd movie, above all things. Attempts to create a false dicotomy (the world= materialism, having things) to justify a stupid decision by the piano guy. A decision that the trumpet guy simply accepts because it's written in the script. He accepts the piano guy is literally going to get blown by an explosion, as if it was the right thing to do, just because the piano guy delivered a completely wrong and flawed argument against the world, which he doesn't know at all. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review Jim D A pretty unique and unpredictable story. The pacing, cinematography, and obviously the music are also pretty on point. I was engaged throughout the movie and I highly recommend it.
