Actor and comedian Adam Sandler (Hotel Transylvania, The Wedding Singer) delivers signature laughs in this coming-of-age animated musical comedy about the last year of elementary school -- as seen through the eyes of a class pet. Jaded 74-year-old lizard Leo (Sandler) has been stuck in the same Florida classroom for decades with his terrarium-mate turtle (Bill Burr). When he learns he only has one year left to live, he plans to escape to experience life on the outside but instead gets caught up in the problems of his anxious students -- including an impossibly mean substitute teacher. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Slick animation, catchy songs, and some winning voice work from a cast led by Adam Sandler help Leo strike an uneasy balance between satirical and sweet.

Barry Hertz Globe and Mail Leo is a surprising, touching delight. Packed with witty original songs and threaded with a genuinely affecting narrative that speaks to kids and adults alike, the film earned the entirety of my attention. Jul 26, 2024 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday "Leo" has a positive message and some first-rate Sandler voice work. For many viewers, that's probably enough. But honesty compels us to note that there's a much better movie in there somewhere. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 31, 2024 Full Review Sophie Butcher Empire Magazine Fun, warm, but meandering and too-long, Leo is an animated adventure with kindness and celebrating individuality on its mind – and is a great showcase for Sandler’s voice talents. Rated: 3/5 Nov 27, 2023 Full Review Sameen Amer The News International (Pakistan) Too many cooks may spoil the broth but it turns out that three directors can, in fact, make a fun movie, at least if Leo is anything to go by.... Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Luke Goodsell ABC News (Australia) The star’s childlike naïveté is well suited to this pre-teen world, where the tone meets kids on their own terms — and the life lessons are delivered with a refreshing lack of sentimentality. Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Shawn Edwards Fox 4 Kansas City This animated musical, called Leo, is way more heartwarming than I was expecting, but it is as silly as I thought it would be. Matthew F My kid loves it and I also found it quite enjoyable. Good lessons for kids and hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Audience Member Leo was a movie that we randomly found while scrolling through Netflix to find something else. Well, my daughter really liked the way it looked so we settled upon it and pressed play. What followed was an hour and a half of raucous laughter and heartwarming serenity. There are very few movies that have impressed me like this one, in their sublime balance of enjoyment for adults and children alike, and this particular example is a paragon of those. Do not hesitate to sit down and watch this one, no matter who you are. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Samuel W A very funny, yet kind of emotional turn of a mid-life crisis sort of movie that follows a lizard who believes he will die soon and wants to do all the things he has always regretted doing in captivity, but finds kids are his true passion all along. With amazing classic actors like Adam Sandler, Bill Burr, and Jason Alexander, along with some new names and other wonderful voices, each one made a memorable performance and had their time in the sun with our hero, Leo. What could have been an ordinary kid’s movie turned out to be a ride for the adults as well, and Adam Sandler’s present history seems to have gotten better with just one little lizard. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Matt Y Uplifting, funny, clever, and relatable to both young and old audiences. There's no real "villains" in this movie which might be a setback in other movies, but this takes the characters pretty well. Definitely a good recommendation for the family! (8.6/10 - Amazing) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Cudalbu R Brilliant movie fueled by Adam Sandler's voice and desire to make something that will be remembered for ages! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Dustin M Do not see this if your kid wants to KILL THEM ASAP Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
