Melinda G Title: Let Me Eat Your Pancreas (2017) Yusuke Uremishi (Yuyu Hakusho Live Adaptation) got me into this movie. Because I was impressed by the lead actor I searched for his other movies and series. "Let Me Eat Your Pancreas" caught my eye. I thought it's about some zombie movie or some violent high school drama. Boy, I was so wrong. I know that the female lead (Sakura) will die on the get go, but leading to that event still had me in tears. The film is about a terminally ill high school student who met an unlikely friendship with the gloomiest guy (Haruki) in their class. Haruki accidentally picked up Sakura's diary and he read she is suffering from pancreatic cancer. That event was the start of their non- labeled relationship. On the library scene, Sakura quoted a saying "when someone eats you, your soul will live on within them", Haruki quipped "are you resorting to cannibalism?". I actually laughed. Sakura also added that when you eat a similar organ (from a pig, or cow etc.) that organ will be healed. There is a restaurant scene where our 2 leads is ordering internal organs. Looks good, it made me hungry. Their casual meeting subtly hints that 2 could be developing feelings for each other but it was not explicitly stated. Towards the end Haruki texted a long message to Sakura about his feelings. On how he wanted her to live, on how happy he was etc. He deleted everything and just typed "Let me eat your pancreas." It was a declaration of his love. Metaphorically, he wants a part of her to live in him even if it's the diseased part of her body. In the end Sakura died and it took Haruki a month to pay his respects. When he mustered the courage to talk to Sakura's mom he got hold of Sakura's diary. Oh how Haruki cried. That scene had me in tears. I do have some cringe moments while watching. I know she's dying but some scenes feels like a manipulation. Good thing we have the diary to explain it. Overall, it was a beautiful film. I do not recommend this film if you are currently grieving over a loss of someone recently. I will have to find the book. Interesting. As a bonus, the adult Haruki is played by Oguri Shun. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/23/23 Full Review Ashley H It was quite different from what I had expected. The book was amazing, and I loved it, read it a couple times, and the characters were not exactly how imagined them to be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
